Sogno,
I just got this in one of my MedTrackalert Newsletters:

"Researchers from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Research Service found that hamsters whose high-cholesterol diets were supplemented with freeze-dried blueberry skins had cholesterol levels that were 20-percent lower than hamsters who didn't eat the blueberries."

Blueberries also reduce colon cancer risk. Gotta go get me some blueberries! tongue

Here's the link to the entire article:

Blueberries control high cholesterol and prevent colon cancer

Hope this helps.

Hi Jeannie,

Not only do blueberries help lower cholesterol but they also help with night vision. The draw back is they can cause a very rapid rise on sugar so be very careful when consuming them. My little niece ate 10 blueberries and was bouncing off the walls in 15 minutes. Still, I do believe they are worth it. I sprinkle them in with a salad and protein and haven't noticed much of an increase.

sad It's true, they are high carb, sort of... 21 gm carb for 1/2 cup, but they could be used in place of a different carb and offer their cholesterol lowering effect... Just trying to be helpful for those who don't want to take the meds... And actually the study was done with blueberry skins. How about if we put them thru the juicer and use the juice to make jelly for all of our friends and then just eat the skins? tongue Yuk!

Jeannie,

You are always very helpful! I think as long as you monitor what the blueberries do to your bs you'll be fine. I eat mine with a little protein and it works. Mix them in with salad, hard boiled eggs, and some boiled ham or chicken and it should be fine. I agree--eating just the skins sounds like Yuk :-D. I wonder if the carbs are higher or lower if you eat fresh blueberries? I know that some fruits the carb count goes up if they're dried.

Thanks for the tip, Jeannie. I'll have to try them. (I haven't eaten fruit in 5 months - I hope my bs can handle them!) Oh, and feel free to "poke your nose in" (as you said) anytime on my posts - I appreciate the help and advice! You are a true asset to this message board. I'm definitely learning alot on here (especially about the Bernstein diet - I'd be lost, weigh more, have high blood sugars, be over-medicated by the doctor, and probably knocking on insulin's door if I had never gotten on Healing Well - Diabetes!) Thank you!
