Hi Lugie, I've heard of some cases in which it's happened but it's not common.  In those cases, the people were very overweight, rather sedentary and ate too many carbohydrates that overloaded their systems.  In those cases, they lost weight and changed their eating and life styles.  I don't advise anyone to stop their meds without approval of their doctors.  As always, our glucose monitors keep us on track so we should always know what our readings are.

Lugie,
I have had some success with stopping some of my meds. I had been following the ADA guidelines, my A1C was creeping up, my doctor added Avandia then Lantus insulin to my regimen and then I had to just keep increasing the Lantus until I was in the good range with my numbers. Then my husband lost his job and I was forced into the position of not being able to afford my medications other than my metformin which I can get for about $4.00 a month. That's when I started the Grand Experiment and got off most of my meds. You can read about my journey below.

A type 1 diabetic cannot stop taking insulin...period. The cells will starve, your body will consume itself, and in the process, poison itself at the same time. Ketoacidosis will kill a type 1 diabetic very quickly and painfully.

Absoutely.  I believe Lugie is type 2.  I would hope that all type 1 diabetics understand they cannot stop taking insulin.
