I have been on a few meds for my diabetes in past years. A couple of weeks ago i got put on Humulin N. I started out taking 10 units, then up to 17 units. I still take 20mgs of Glyburdie. I got a call from my doctor saying i needed to come in. He wants to take me off the Humulin N and put me on BYETTA. He said if that does not work then i'll be on insulin 4 times a day. I have never heard of the shot before.
Does anyone else take this? I thought it was strange that he took me off insulin so fast. I have already been on metformin for years. tried actos, gained 40 + pounds with that. Then i tried Prandin. My sugars have been out of control for almost two years now, plus who knows how long i had diabetes before i found out. I'm wondering how much damage it has done!
My doctor isn't one for checking these unless he feels there is just cause.

Byetta works differently than insulin and maybe that's why he's doing this. I would recommend that you get a referral to an Endocrinologist and get this straightened out. Also, you don't mention what food plan or exercise plan you are using... Do you keep a food diary? Maybe if we had more info we could help you more.

Heard of what shot?

Took you OFF insulin? I thought he was going to put you ON insulin if the Byetta didn't work.

Confused....

Mia,

What kind of exercise and diet are you following. That is important information if you are on Byetta. After 2 1/2 months on the 5 mcg pen my numbers are great. I had a fasting blood sugar of 100 this morning. I also take 1000 mg of metformin XR twice daily. I have reduced my carb intake to about 120 carbs a day and I follow a walking program (3000 steps in 30 minutes daily).

I started the walking program last week and in the week since I have lost six pounds and my bloog sugar average went from the mid 140s to the mid 111s. That is a pretty good result from exercise. We all react differently, but modification of diet, full medical compliance and exercise are the key factors to keeping you sugars under control. For the record I was in denial for almost 6 years before I got to this point.
