I am 52 yrs. old, female and apparently have had high cholesterol for quite a long time.  I have fatty liver and I believe it has been aggravated due to going through a difficult menopause.  I have gained 40 lbs in 3 years, my abdomen is now distended - I am miserable.  My internist, gastroentologist and gynocologist have shown little concern nor offered much help.  I need to find a doctor that can cooralate all of these problems to find a solution that includes more than a low carb diet.  Have other women gone through the same thing?  Any suggestions for outcome?  Help! cry

Sorry to hear about your woes, Sarah. I can understand how you would feel miserable not having help from your health care team. Maybe it's time to find a new one?

I didn't think there was a correlation between menopause and the liver. I'll have to investigate that one.

Good question about the menopause angle.  I'm 67, but when I was 49 I started gaining weight and having symptoms of blood sugar ups and downs, high triglycerides & cholest.  It wasn't until this year an ultra-sound for pain showed a fatty liver, gallstones and blood tests classified me as pre-diabetic.
I went on a diet, based mostly on diabetic terms for the last 8 weeks and have lost about 10 lbs.  I tried Metformin but Dr. took me off after 6 wks.  I got a meter and have test periodically but I'm still learning what my readings mean and what to do about it.
I believe this all started with my total hysterectomy and thus menopause.

G'day I have been going through early menopause since I was 31 my doctor said it is rare but because i had a emergency cesarian with our only child when i was 19 got a infection in the cut which was meant to be only 10cm and dissolving stitches turned out to be 30 cm not dissolving stiches doctors were orthpedic surgeons not gynos one could not sew straight the other could not cut straigt my tummy looks like a freak show .Three years later i had severe pains in my right side under my ribs temp went through roof rushed to hospital ultrasound revealed gallstones 5 big suckers and fatty liver .I tried many treatments because i am to scared to have another operation ,i went to a doctor he told me to have a glass of wine with my meals and if i had fatty food have a beer and flush my system out at least once a week with heaps of water and gastrolites solution has worked for my fatty liver and gallbladder so far i also relax in a bath with lavender and mint essences for my menopause still no results for that though
