Boy that was a great doctor's appointment.  My brother's are both diabete, about a year or so for both, they are in their late 40's and early 50's so I figured I'd have a little more time to get ready (if you can ever get ready) to get it.  My Mom doesn't have it and neither did my Dad, But one of my nephews does, so I knew it was coming.  Just a feeling, but being told I do, sort of took my breathe away.  I guess it's not too bad, he wants me to check  my blood once a day in the morning and take a pill (just another to the hand full I aready take) I also have cronic pain from a ruputered disc that was "fixed" in 2007, and after reading some of the paperwork he gave me I see that an illness or pain can bring it on also.  So now I need to figure out what I can eat and can't.  I know bread, pasta, taters, and things like that are no no's, but I have a thing for pickles dill, and green plums.  The sour-er the better in my book.  I want my lips to pucker so bad you'd think my face was inside out LOL.... Does anyone know of a book or website I can go to that will give me a list maybe of what I can and can not eat and drink... I know no more Cokes which is a bummer cause I love my Cokes.

Thanks in advance for any help,

Trouble

Hi Trouble, welcome to the Diabetes Forum.  What have your blood sugar readings been?  What medication are you taking for the diabetes?  And what other meds are you taking for other conditions?  If your pancreas has been damaged in some way and doesn't function correctly, then you could indeed be a diabetic because of that.  In any case, the very basics of a diet to follow is to keep away from those carbs you mentioned, as well as rice, corn and anything made with flour and sugar.  Check out lists of low glycemic food, the lower the better.  You can google around to find lists of the glycemic index of food.  In general, vegetables, meat, chicken, fish, nuts, cheeses, eggs, oils and butters are fine. You can have your diet Cokes but not a huge amount because even loading up on diet drinks can have an effect on blood sugar.  Check out the carbohydrate amount on food packages.  If you buy any food in packages, always check the carb content.  And read back through our older posts that talk about food and diet.  Let us know how it goes.

Lanie,

Let's see I take 2 blood pressure meds, birth control, now the Januvia, also mulit vitamin, calcium, fish oil, vitamin C, ohhh and Naproxin... boy thats a mouth full.  Plus pain meds.  After taking the Januvia this morning and going to get my meter, it was 98 which she told me was good.  From the fasting test I did last month, it was 142, which the doctor said should not have been that high unless I'd ate and then it should have only been around 125.  I've been googling all morning, and I'm going to go see my oldest brother this weekend and talk to my sis in law and see what I can eat.

Thank you for listening... you tooo Snow :)

Hi Trouble, you're right about those numbers.  Doctors look for under 100 for fasting.  Fasting over 126 is a red flag for doctors to diagnose diabetes if it happens a few times - of course, there are other determiners as well.  Testing 2 hours after you eat a meal will tell you if you made good choices for the food you ate.  Welcome to the club!  cool

Mmmmm... I looove the sour stuff, too. Vinegar, lemon, lime, grapefruit, all good. I rarely drink anything but water but, I like to add a squish lemon or lime in the summer; really tart and a little goes a long way. Home made ice tea is good if you sweeten it yourself with a sugar substitute. Those Crystal Light things aren't bad. In the US, Ocean Spray has a sugar-free drink we don't get here in Canada, but I heard it's really good (and very low carb).

Trouble,
It's difficult to face diabetes because it's always there. When you wake up you test. When you eat you count. When you go out you carry candy in your purse in case you have a low... It feels like a pain in the patootie!

But it does make you sit up and take notice of how you are doing and what you are doing. I am healthier now with my diabetes diagnosed than I was before because I pay better attention to my eating and exercise. There are lots of great people here who have lots of great ideas so read back in the posts and see all the stuff you can learn at your leisure.

Thanks for all the info and advise.  I'm sorry not on over the weekend,my puter at the house has a virus on it and I wasn't at work I took some me time LOL... I've been watching what I eat and drink and talkin to ya'll and my sis n law I didn't do too bad this weekend.  I actually lost around 13 pounds :) from what my scales said to what the doctors did.  (I know its prolly not that much, but I'm stickin with the number :) makes me feel better)  I messed up yesterday by not eating enough and when I did it was KFC baked chicken, but I messed up by eating the biscut, mashed taters and cole slaw it was 121 when I checked it this morning.

OHHHHH, another question, I have the meter that let you test on different parts of your body, I don't like doing my fingers, so I've been doing my fore-arm.  The problem I'm having is its not giving me any blood, I sometimes have to do it 3 or 4 times.  (YIKESSSSS, I hate needles) should I just go back to my fingers???? or is there another place I should try???? I only have to check once a day right now.

Thanks again

Trouble

TroubleMaker, I think testing on the fingers is more accurate. Just being diagnosed it might be better to test there. To be sure, check with your doctor or the office nurse. Good luck traveling this zig-zagging diabetic road with us:) Don't worry, it gets easier as you go along and everyone needs a treat and messes up sometimes. Is only human:)HMMMM_ Peanut butter ice cream. LOL

I have been having problems also with my blood sugars staying down. I'm happy if my lowest is 100 cause that's where I feel the best. My highest has been 284. I told my doctor that but he didn't seem concerned, but I was.

I am having trouble with my sugars again now to. I don't know if it's stress or what.?

I'm sooooo sorry I didnt get back in time to reply.  It's been a mad house here at work and my sis in law has gone batty and my hubby and I are the one she calls drunk to cry too.

I hope your sugars are back in check, and everything is ok.

Trouble yeah

I went back to my DR again and told him my sugars were going up and down and I didn't feel good and showed him my stats.
He finally upped my Metformin and now I feel better.

Hara,

Great to hear that... soorrryy I take soooo long to get back, but the mad house is getting worse LOL... We had storms come through on Monday and knocked down 3 trees, two on one neighbor and 1 on part of my back yard and the other neighbors yard.  I've been running here at work back and forth, and everytime I come on I have to get off cause bossman is "hollaring" for somethng LOL.. silly man.

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!!!!!!!!!

I went to the doctor yesterday and after a month checking my blood, I'm running between 86 and 111... he said not bad. He's happy and I'm happy.... Lost 13 pounds so far (8 by his scales, which HAVE to be wrong)

Thanks for all the advise and support.....

Trouble yeah

I had a Ruemy appt. today. She is doing more blood work. She wants to find out where my INFLAMATION MARKERS are coming from. I told her "Good luck." and just giggled. More power to her if she can find it.

She told me I was Aniemic. I said, "I already know that. Been that way since I was born."
She's also checking my B-12 and other stuff.

I remember the day I went to get my blood work (test) done for my diabetes. I felt this impending doom.
