I am wrong in assuming that if I took my blood glucose at 1 hour and then again at 2 hours that the 1 hour reading should be higher than the 2 hour reading?

If that is true then I am really backwards because between one hour and 2 hours mine went up by 16.

Not necessarily.  It depends on what you eat and how much.  More protein and fats (e.g. oil in salad) would help draw out the effects on metabolism and blood sugar.  If you ate less protein and fat with the meal, you'd probably have a higher reading at 1 hour than 2 hours, so if your meal had more carbs than protein and fat, you'd probably spike faster.  Annoying, isn't it? tongue

I was playing around to see what effect foods have. Todays lunch was HIGH in carbs so if that is true then the spike should have been higher. I had white rice and chicken lo mein. It is a food that usually makes me feel really "weird" so I wanted to try it and see the result.

Oh gee, I suppose there are explanations including individual metabolism rates.  I would probably have spiked early on and stayed high for more than 2 hours if I'd eaten all those carbs.  For some reason I don't come down fast after a lot of carbs.  I stay elevated and then slowly come down.  I know that from the beginning of my journey here, which helped reinforce my decision to go low-carb.

I guess I will have to wait until I am completely off the prednisone to see how big of an issue I have, if any. I just remember feeling like this after eating meals like that BEFORE the prednisone. It was only because of being on the steroids that I started monitoring my glucose levels.

I appreciate everyones advice here. I have started to taper the prednisone so we shall see what happens.

I think the pred has a lot to do with what is happening. I am on 10mg permanently. Had an asthma attack and infection so put on 50mg for two weeks and then 40mg for two weeks then 30mg for two weeks and now 20mg for a month. My glucose reading seem to spike when they want, eating or not. Have to really watch it.I eat very low carb and test 10 times a day just to keep my levels down while on pred. Pred does nasty things to the body. Drink lots of water as that seems to help me. Also helps with the hunger the pred gives. Good luck:)

Thanks ceebee. There doesn't seem to be any consistent pattern with when the levels spike. I am on 25 mg's for a week, then 20, 15, 10 etc. I hope to get off this stuff ASAP! The last time I tried to go under 20mg I starting having problems again. I hate this drug!

Risan,

Do you have asthma too? I have trouble getting off the 10mg pred and that gives me trouble with my glucose levels if I don't watch closely. I test ten times a day and only eat when my numbers are low. I am trying to get down to the 5mg now. I hate going on the higher pills but it is the only way to treat a severe asthma attack. Is your diabetes pred induced? If I can get off pred I may not need diabetic meds. Just keep testing to see what foods make your glucose levels spike. Different foods affects all differently. Good luck and take care:)

Ceebee,

I have ulcertive Colitis. I've been on prednisone since March 4.

How in the world do you test ten times a day. I only test 4 maybe 5 times a day. LOL

I'm not sure if all this is prednisone induced or not. I only started testing after starting prednisone. Now that I know when my sugar is high and how I feel I do remember feeling like this prior to the prednisone, but I guess I won't know for sure until I get off the prednisone.

It's up to me to control the levels though as both my GI and family doctor don't seem to think it's a problem.

All of my fingers have callouses! I think if you have a tendency to be diabetic the pred brings in on. I have been on pred 5 years. The docs keep upping it and downing it so I am trying to get off by myself. High glucose levels are always bad. One day they might skyrocket like mine did. Keep checking and learn what your body will tolerate to eat. Take care:)

Thanks ceebee. I am trying to watch what I'm eating and what effect it has. I made an appointment with an endocrinologist in two weeks. I'm not looking so much at the number but more how I feel and then what level is associated with that feeling. So far when I get above about 145 I start feeling really crappy and sick.
