I just heard a very interesting news item on the radio this morning.  The main story is here:

... with other takes on it here:

The gist of it is that a group of studies has found a link between an immune system malfunction, obesity and diabetes.  Essentially, T-cells residing in the visceral adipose fat (the fat inside your body) stop working properly.  The Canadian doctor I heard this morning said tests were done on obese mice using anti CD3, an immunosuppressive drug.  Apparently, the drug kills off a number of rogue T-cells and when they regenerate, it is like a computer after rebooting -- the T-cells start doing their proper job.

The exciting part is that this drug and others used in the tests have been around for years so lengthy studies and trials should not be required before they are available to the public.

Apparently, the full study is available in the July 26th online edition of Nature Medicine but I haven't been able to find a link to that yet.

Well .... for diabetic mice so far ... but control and some reversal looks promising.  I've already emailed the Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto and asked for more information.  Anything I get, I'll pass on.

Thanks, Chris.  There seem to be so many studies now.  I hope some treatments will come out of these for practical use. yeah

I don't want to create any false hopes but this one seems promising, if only because the drugs involved have already been through the trials period (over-the-counter allergy treatments & other tested items). From what I've read and experienced, it seems that once an announcement is made and the treatment comes under government scrutiny, it disappears into limbo. This one; supported by Harvard no less; seems to have a little more than a glimmer of hope.

Plus, the Sick Kids doctor (Dr. Michael Dosch) I heard this morning has a sense of humour. When asked why he took on the cause, he replied, "When I started medical school 3 weeks ago (chuckle), I decided that I wanted to be part of a cure for a disease." He is obviously no spring chicken and has spent most of his life working on diabetes. I trust (almost) anyone that has a sense of humour turn

(except the guy that sold me my truck -- HE had the last laugh!)

Anyway, I'm going to keep after this story. Stay tuned.

A few weeks ago, I sent an email to the Sick Kids PR Department asking for updates -- no response.

I finally found a link to Nature Medicine here:

To read the articles mentioned, you have to subscribe -- $225 U.S./yr. confused

Discouraging, but I'll keep after it.

Thanks for doing all the detective work. We can't always get all the answers but we keep searching.
