Hey! I've just been diagnosed with diabetes which was totally unexpected because I don't really fit the profile but I also don't know if it's in my family history or not. I've been doing some reading but I really just want to know what are some of the better foods/ snacks to eat and what types of foods I should just stay away from. Please help me!

(Jeeze there's a lot of 'unique' people around here ... shows what a great place it is I guess smilewinkgrin
Can you tell us more about your diagnosis (type 1, type 2) ... any medications prescribed/currently being taken .... lifestyle (do you regularly exercise for example)?
I'm a type 2 since July/08 and have had great success with a low-carb diet (no bread, pasta, potatoes, sugar ... basically nothing white) but I'm not taking any medications so this may not completely apply to you.
Tell us more & others will jump in to help wink

If you can stay away from 99% of what comes out of a box/package... you're half way there.

Nuts and cheese or banana/apple with peanut butter make great snacks. Balanced meals made up of simply (grilled, steamed, baked) cooked protein (meat, poultry, fish, eggs), veg (NOT potatoes or corn), and some fat & carbs are what you always want to strive for. Avoid fast food - it's not really "food". As Chris says, the nothing white plan works really well if you want to keep things simple.
- Phishbowl (Type 1 since Jan'05 - Levemir, NovoRapid)

Mercy, can you please post more information about your diagnosis?  Type 1 or 2.  How old you are, if you have a blood sugar monitor and test your blood sugar, etc.  Thanks.
