They put me on METFORMIN.  I had terrible pains night/day.  I had gas, gas and gas.  I couldnt stand the pain.  I made another apt and they now have me on actos and simvastatin.
The substitute dr took it for granted my thyroid is okay.

I didnt start this new med yet as I want my thyroid checked first.

Why is a endocronologist better to see than the dr ?  I saw that on the other post.

But I want to know WHAT CAUSES the gas pain.
I couldnt live with what I was experiencing and actos has too many side effects i'm concerned with:
l. GAS
2.teeth problems
3. feet and arm swelling (which also happened on the metformin my ankle swelled up so darn badly in the middle of the night i got up and couldnt walk on it and lasted for 3 days)
4. bone fractures (which i already have osteoporosis and arthritus and a problem in my hand that i use - and my legs)

But the biggy is the gas due to my operation I had that envolved my intestines.

Like why gas -- what is the main reason for the gas
that the medication creates ?

Also actos it says in one network DO NOT USE if fluid retention - it is on my chart i get it - like why did they give me a med that says DO NOT USE if fluid retention ?

The main reason for the gas is that you are still consuming too many starches. Your doctor is trying to get the sugars down that you have put into your body. Why not start at your mouth and not put them in there?

Starting right now do this:
Do not eat anything white except cauliflower or cottage cheese.
Do not eat anything made with corn, wheat, rice, barley or potatoes.
Do not drink fruit juices or regular soda.

DO eat lean meats like ham, chicken breast, pork loin, fish, lean beef.
DO eat eggs with a slice of cheese for breakfast.
DO make "sandwiches" with romaine or leaf lettuce instead of bread.
DO put some peanut butter on a 1/2 banana for a delicious snack.
DO eat two vegetables at lunch and dinner.
DO eat high nutrition fruits such as citrus, bananas, strawberries instead of "empty" ones like pears.
DO start reading nutrition labels to learn the carbohydrate content of foods so you can make informed decisions about your food plan.
DO take control of your health for your own benefit and start a regular food diary with blood sugar readings each morning upon waking and two hours after a meal. This will give you an accurate idea of how the foods you eat affect your blood sugar levels. This will also help you choose which foods to eat that will give you the nutrition you need without the excess sugar (gas!) in your system. It may also make it so that you do not need to take Actos.

By following this food plan I was able to get off insulin. It may work for you also.

I don't agree that it's a strict diet.  I eat very low carb and this is what I eat:

chicken, beef, pork, fish, squirrel, shrimp, scallops, sausage, bacon (most kinds: regular, turkey and Canadian)
green beans, cauliflower, summer squash (yellow and zucchini), broccoli, spinach, eggplant, mushrooms, green onions, bell peppers
salad greens including spinach, cilantro
cucumbers, tomatoes, radishes, olives, artichoke hearts, avocados, celery
cheese, nuts
eggs, butter, Smart Balance Omega spread

Yes, you will lose weight because carbohydrates cause weight gain.  If you want to control your blood sugar, you should be serious about what you eat!

Mmmm Lanie, you got me thinking of grilled vegetables drizzled in olive oil and garlic along side a nice tender squirrel. Yum-O!

Marinate in wine and water, with bay leaves, cut up onion, celery and carrot, salt and pepper over night.  Remove from marinade. Brown in butter and olive oil with cut up onions.  Add garlic, parsley and oregano then water to cover with some sherry.  Simmer for about an hour.   (Also good with added nuts!)
