Got the results fromt eh GTT and visited my family doc today.  He drew blood and is doing the A1C.  He gave me a meter and said to test once a day but when should I test? What time of day?

Hi Meg.  The doctor didn't tell you when to test? confused    Well, normally you would test first thing when you get up before you have anything - fasting.  Another time is 2 hours after a meal.  So, if I were you, I would get some paper if you don't have a little log book (although most meters come with log books), and write the date and time and your blood sugar reading and of course if it's a fasting reading or if it's 2 hours post-prandial (which means after eating).  I would do a couple of days of fasting reading and then a couple of days of post breakfast or lunch or dinner.  That is, if he only wants you testing once a day.  Keep in mind that morning fasting for a non-diabetic is under 100.  The ADA would probably suggest a post-prandial under 120.  Good luck.

I know what you mean.  Sometimes even if I'm not in a hurry, I don't remember what the doctor says.  And this can be especially true if you're talking about something new.  So, next time you see him, have a pen and paper out and jot down what he says, or repeat aloud what he says (e.g., "So you're saying I should test when I get up?") or take someone with you to the app't.   And don't forget to read back through our past posts to learn more about testing, diet, etc.  And come back and ask questions, ok?
