My mom is a diabetic, she has been for several years now but has never been good about testing her sugar. So I bought her the monitor that you can test your arm with but she's unable to get any blood from her arm. Has anyone got any tidbits that I can pass on to her. She was put on insulin Wednesday and it's imperative that she tests, as you all well know. But if it hurts her she's not likely to test and she's to the point all her fingers hurt. Suggestions/advice please?? Thanx ~T~
I don't mean to offend. If I do Plz let me know

She can test on her arm as well as the top of her thigh. First, pump the muscle thats under the spot you're going to test. (Do coffee drinking motions or kicking motions.) Also, you can put a warm washcloth over the spot you are going to test to increase blood flow...Then gently rub the spot where you're going to test. I like to poke with the lancets myself without the use of the poker thingie. I stretch the skin gently and poke. Then I use the little cap that came on the poker thing to press down the spot around where I made the poke and the blood comes up. Try this and see if it helps...

You're very welcome. I have a helpful idea for finger poking, too. First I hang the arm I'll be testing on down for about five minutes then I make a little mini tourniquet on the finger I will be testing. I use the rubber bands that come on broccoli in the store for this. Only leave them in place for about 10 to 15 seconds. Once you do the poke, undo the rubber band and the blood should flow very well.

Also, it's difficult to get blood out if I haven't been drinking enough liquids so advise mom to drink lots of water just previous to her testing.
