So the past couple of days I have noticed that my urine has a sweet, almost maple syrup kind of smell to it. Is this a sign of diabetes?

It's possible but you need to see your doctor so you can be tested and diagnosed properly.  Does diabetes 2 run in your family?

I think that it does, but I'm not positive.

More likely that you've just eaten something that's causing the smell. Some supplements, particularly Fenugreek, cause a maple-syrup type smell.

People with high blood glucose don't have strange-smelling urine.

Edited - wrong.

Uncontrolled diabetes can cause sweet-smelling urine.  There are other conditions that can cause strong-smelling urine, like eating asparagus, or having another medical condition besides diabetes.  However, if it smells sweet, yes, it can be a symptom which is why the person needs to see a doctor to be tested.

Sorry, yes, Lanie's right. I have type 1 and never smelled anything unusual, even when I was running super-high at diagnosis. I read that sweet-smelling urine can be caused by uncontrolled diabetes, probably more of a type 2 symptom than a type 1. I also ran across something called maple syrup urine disease, but it doesn't sound like it fits your description. Here's a link a found: wiki.answers.com/Q/What_causes_different_sweet_smelling_urine
