I read somewhere that one glass of wine with dinner helps your body's insulin response and is good for you if you have prediabetes.  However, I"m just not sure of this. I am wondering if any of you out there who do the testing regularly can tell me if you have an opinion about this. Do you think a glass of red wine a day is a helpful thing, or raises your blood sugar too much and is therefore best avoided?

Hi Petunia.  Wine is fine with your meals.  Diabetics had been cautioned in the past about alcohol because it can cause low blood sugar specifically in those people who take medication.  I always have wine but I prefer white.  Of course literature says that red is better for you.  rolleyes  Anyway, in most people it does not raise blood sugar - but you need to test before and after your meal so you know what effects the wine has on you.  Mixed drinks often use ingredients with sugar, so they can raise the blood sugar, as can fortified wine such as sherry or port or liqueurs.  mad  But you asked about red wine and if your doctor says it's ok as long as it doesn't interfere with medication, then go for it!

Although I like wine with my evening meal and tend to believe it is a good thing, there's a posting around here somewhere that explains some of the negative aspects of wine and alcohol in general.  (I just had a look for the message but can't find it)

Essentially, the writer explained that alcohol confuses the liver.

Type 'wine diabetes' in the Search box up above for lots of info.

The liver looks at alcohol as poison. It will switch into overdrive and focus exclusively on getting it cleared from the blood stream... at the expense of some of it's other primary functions, like regulating glucose levels. For those on certain meds or with certain conditions, this can be very problematic (think: lows). It's been reported that limited quantities can actually be beneficial for some (heart, circulation, etc.), but those benefits need to be weighed along with medical history to determine which side you fall on. Discuss it with your doc.

Rule of thumb: NEVER drink alcohol without food.

Very interesting and thank you to all for the info.. I did a search, but couldn't figure out how to search just the diabetes forum. My searches searched all the forums. Is it possible to look within just this forum?

I don't think you can limit the search to only Diabetes Forum unless you type in something like "diabetes wine" or "diabetes alcohol".
