Got an email from one of our moderators TV Editor, (Chris) and he is recovering from surgery today. It was supposed to be a simple outpatient deal and turned out to be 7 hours of surgery. He's in a lot of "discomfort" (as they say in the medical field) and needs to go back in 10 days to have a stent removed. He's not looking forward to that!

Kidney stone surgery is not a fun deal. I've had two of them myself. Anyway, he could use your prayers if you're the praying type, good thoughts and positive energy or whatever you've got.

Sending positive energy his way. I'm glad he's through the surgery and can hopefully start feeling better every day now.

Here's to a quick recovery, Chris.

(I've been posting my saga over in the Kidney Diseases and Disorders forum just to keep the Diabetes area clear ... multi-tasking? ;-)

I'm OK right now. No pain since the stent was removed but also not looking forward to Round 2 with the same surgeon in the next couple of weeks to remove another/the same stone. My doctor recommended I don't switch surgeons at this point but I'm still concerned.

Thanks for asking :)

Glad you're doing better. What type of stones are they? Calcium or uric acid?

Well, somewhere along the line something was anaylsed (no stone removed but a sample was given pre-op) and it turned out to be calcium oxalate. Doc wants me on a low oxalate diet. Surfing today looking for ideas and it looks like between the diabetes and the stones (' a rock and a heart place ' ? ... there's a pun in there somewhere ;-) all I can eat is water with a heaping side order of air sad

Lol, Chris, I feel your pain. I have ulcerative colitis (low-fat, limited fiber), high cholesterol (low-fat) and type II (low carb.) You just have to balance the needs.

You might also consider asking for a referral to a good clinical dietician, to get help in sorting out a diet.

Actually, the calcium oxalate stones are the ones I form and that's why I was originally put on hydrochlorothyazide. My nephrologist noted that one of the side effects of this drug is that it causes you to retain calcium in the bloodstream so that it doesn't spill over into the urine. It's worked for me for 33 years. Both of my brothers are on it as well for the same reason.

You might want to check the water in your locale. If it's high in calcium that might be part of the problem as well. Here in Mid-Michigan you could take all of the kids off of milk, and as long as they received their vitamin A from veggies and vitamin D from the sunshine they would all grow up tall and strong. For us, the same calcium build up that shows up in the shower head shows up in my stones. Good luck with this.
