My family doctor placed me on 1 mg of the generic form of Amaryl because prednisone has increased my glucose levels.  He said it was the lowest dose he could give me and just see if it works out.  So far, so good....however, yesterday and today (I started the med on Wednesday) I started having pain in the upper part of my abdomen.  Tums relieved it.  Don't know whether this is due to the Amaryl or could be prednisone too.  Anyone else have issues with this med?

Ulcerative Proctitis since Sept of 1998. Hospitalized for eight days.  Prednisone, Asacol, Rowasa enemas.  Two year remission. Flare..switched from Asacol to Colazal.  Two year remission.  Started 6MP in 2002.  Flared yearly from 2003 to May of 08.  Hospitalized for ten days in May of 08.  Flaring more often since.  Off 6MP. Remicade failed.  Humira failed.   Meds: Colazal, prednisone, Cort & canasa suppositories, Benicar (Blood pressure).  Surgery scheduled for June 28th...maybe sooner if possible.  Still flaring

Thanks Lanie...I see where stomach upset is listed.  Darn it all.  It seems to be helping a lot controlling my blood glucose level.  You would think only 1 mg wouldn't have much of a side effect, but I guess along with the prednisone, which could cause ulcers in the stomach, it could wreak a little havoc.  I took my dose today and so far, so good.

So far so good, then?  Maybe sometimes it depends on what you eat or how much or when you take the meds....  Lots of possibilities here.  I hope it will settle down with time.  I know there are other diabetes meds that can cause stomach upsets.  I hope other members will come in and offer their suggestions too.

At 5 am this morning I woke up with stomach pain and diarrhea.  It really wiped me out.  I didn't take the Amaryl today at all just to see if it was the culprit.  I am still dealing with ulcerative proctitis but it is pretty well  under control.  All I ate for lunch was chicken broth with thin noodles and some low salt saltine crackers and diet jello, tea with sweet and low.  Three hours later my blood glucose is way up to 161!!!  Darn that prednisone!!!  No stomach pain though.  I'll have to phone the doctor tomorrow.  With a glucose level like that after three hours of hardly any food, I need to take something.

Ugh, you must be miserable.  :(   The high blood sugar might not only be because of the pred though.  The noodles and crackers would have made it spike for sure.  Flour!  Your body will react to that like it does to sugar.  Also, I think just feeling ill can raise your blood sugar.  Once I had a really bad headache that upset my stomach.  I had eaten only a few slices of cucumber previously and my blood sugar spiked to the 160's too - something that never happened before.  In any case, it's good to communicate with your doctor.  Hope you feel better.

Well, I took the Amaryl today...no stomach discomfort, so maybe it was something I ate.  My 2 hr pp after a lunch of grilled cheese on low carb bread and some baked Lays was 102.  It will be interesting to see what my 2 hr pp will be after the dinner I just ate though...chicken, 1/2 yam, cranberry sauce and 1/2 dip of ice cream...just a taste because my hubby eats it like crazy and it looked so good. nono
