I am concerned that my fbs still is lowest at 120 and highest at 140 even after being on 1000 mg metformin for 3 months. I watch my carbs and since being on meds my a1c has dropped from 6.7 to 5.4. I don't think my dr. is concerned with the fbs. I am going on a cruise in 3 weeks and I have no intention of "watching" what I eat. Wonder if I could ask for some additional medication that I could use while misbehaving? Any ideas? I know I am being selfish, but being newly diagnosed ,I am still in denial just how serious diabetes is.

(I gave your post a subject.)

Hi and welcome back! Is that 1,000 metformin for the whole day? 500 in the morning and 500 in the evening? If so, you might ask your doctor if he thinks it should be changed to a higher dosage. And tell him about your cruise and that you think you'll be going off your eating plan.

Some doctors have different ideas about what acceptable fasting or A1c levels should be.

I understand that there will be lots of temptations of wickedly rich food on the cruise but you can also up your activity level by swimming and walking to get more exercise in to help with the blood sugar. Also, I would suggest not eating heavy carbs at night before bed.

But do speak to your doctor and tell him about the cruise and also your concerns about your fasting, that it's still around 120 - 140 because that is too elevated.

Have a nice time on the cruise. Where are you going?

Thanks Lanie: The metformin is 500 mg in am and 500 mg in pm. I will be leaving from Puerto Rico , going to St Thomas, St Kitts, Curacoa, and Aruba. I love pizza and popcorn...waffles and high carb junk. I cannot eat popcorn at night at all. I wake up with a 150 fbs. I have considered adding 500 mg metformin of my own accord at lunch. It is very curious my sugar pre evening meal is under 100 then while sleeping, sugar trolls invade my body.

I hope you have a great cruise and the weather holds! It's good that you already know that you'll be off your plan so be prepared. As I said, it would be a good idea to get some activity in to help counteract the food you know you'll be eating. Dancing! Walking the deck! Walking around when you're in port.

I'm glad you're concerned about your blood sugar so it might be a good time to talk dosages over with your doctor, not just for the cruise but for general maintenance.

My thoughts are that there are times when I'm going to be off my plan and I know it, so I might be more restrictive beforehand and afterwards. However, I do know that I will always go back to my very low carb way of eating because that is what's best for me.

Bon voyage!
