Well, nothing like a little controversy to get participation on the board.  To this end, I thought maybe we could use this thread to review some of the more popular books out there that concern Diabetes and Diabetic issues.  Like Amazon, half.com and many of the other book sellers that have reviews, you can add your 2 cents worth here.  This is strictly "your opinion" but please have read the book before you comment on it.

Please give it a rating (1 to 5 stars) and then tell us what you liked and what you didn't like about the book and most importantly, WHY !!

PLEASE, no trashing other members just because you don't agree with their opinion, we are all entitled on one (opinion that is).

I'm going to kick this off with a more controversial book, one my ex wife happens to love and gave me as a present because she thought it was so good.  Well as you can see I have a very different opinion of it but hey....thats my opinion....if you've read this book lets hear what you have to say!!!

Rating)  * * * *      Natural Cures "They" Don't Want You To Know about (Hardcover)  List price $29.95  Author - Kevin Trudeau

Come on...please do a little web research before buying this book. You'll save yourself money, time, shipping, and maybe your health. This book is disappointing at best - harmful at worst. Trudeau is primarily a salesman and this is his opus. There is almost no mention of cures here - only common knowledge remedies for minor aches. For real problems he refers you to clinics (who will likely refer you to a doctor.) Oh - and you're invited to purchase his `natural cures' newsletter. Yikes.

I always have one response to these salesmen: let's say your story is true. You've stumbled across the cure for diabetes and it's a common grass in China. One bite and you're cured. Here's the challenge. Take the money from your book, buy an acre of grass in China, and bring back some grass. Take it down to the LA Diabetes clinic and let everyone take a bite. You will be famous and wealthy beyond your imaginings by the time the story hits the news.

I'm not holding my breath.

I've seen that author selling everything from shoelaces to a cure for cancer. I tend to agree with you.

I bought the book and it is worthless. The best material i got was from a many name Smith who thinks the bad oils is our problem I use only flax and olive(unprocessed.} he has his diabetes under control now. What we eat is our problem and how active we are.

Yes, I've read it cover to cover.
Richard Bernstein is himself a Type 1 diabetic and a strong advocate of a low carb diet for all diabetics. His thesis is that the conventional wisdom on diabetic diet is misguided and that normal blood sugars are achievable and not only prevent but can reverse the complications of diabetes. I had come to a similar point of view myself before reading this book so, in a sense it simply reinforced my beliefs. Nice to feel that I'm not a lone crank though.
The book is impeccably researched and has become my first point of reference on all diabetes issues.
I'm a type 1 diabetic and have followed a low carb regime for the past 4 years. My blood sugars are normal, my weight has fallen by 4 stone and my lipids better any of my non diabetic friends.
I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone and challenge any non-believers to a half-marathon!

Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution:-----absolutely great.!!..if he's selling anything, it's his experience...type1(I dunno, I'm not) but I have used this intake control technique and come to the exact same oppinion of every one of his techniques, before I read the book. Honestly have no idea where the overhypothesized traditional medical views of insulin resistance came from. Maybe this is why the current "cure" medications are costing so many people quality of life, that is, we are in constant fear of HYPOGLYCEMIA and other side effects, when the solution for type two folks is so simple-"control you intake abd BGs" or be addicted to "hypoglycemic drugs" AND loose your life and quality of life! I believe the human body is much more reziliant that doctors believe. It's the diabetics lack of will-power over food and honesty that is OUR problem(I'm an unmedicated type2 in tight control, but still a compulsive overater fighting for control over food.... daily!).
