This was originally published in the New York Times Sunday Magazine in 2002. Have you ever noticed that people in photographs back before the 1950's were a lot thinner than many people in general today? Read this.

Just skimmed the article, it's quite long!

But I agree, protein, fruits & veggies are the way to go!!

And it's hell fighting your way back to that if you've managed to trigger "metabolic syndrome" like I have. Ugh.

The brain is made up of fat so it makes sense we need fat to live. The articles talks about eating fat but it is important to understand all fat is not equal. The fat in avocados, coconuts, real butter, eggs are good for us. The process fat made by food companies(tranfats and hydrogenated oils) are bad for us. When you are buying the process foods you are getting the bad fats and different chemicals. Read the labels and if you can't understand the ingredients leave it alone. Best to limit eating food that comes in a package. The one thing we have to do to get our health back is eat real food not the food that come with chemicals.

my understanding of the formulation of the brain is axions, dendrites, synapses, cortexes, white and grey matter, hippocampus, this sort of stuff. ganglions, lobes, cerebellum etc etc.

Yes, those are parts of the brain. Here is an article that explains about the fat content of the brain and how dietary fat (but not all fats) helps us be healthy. /www.psychologytoday.com/blog/prime-your-gray-cells/201109/the-skinny-brain-fats

got it, but there we go again on the bi-polar bandwagon on fish oil. words like 'may', need to be highlighted strongly and bolded. people get sucked into supplements as they think they are better than medication. having a manic episode and it veering into psychosis, I can't see a shrink giving me a hit of fatty acids!!! but thx for the education.

HT, I don't think the article is suggesting dietary oil use to replace medication. It's just stating the importance of oil in the diet, and not all oil; transfat is harmful but we need other oil to be healthy. I posted this as a follow-up to the first article which talked about how low-fat diets have actually backfired.
