Hello all,

I was just looking up possible causes of frequent urination, and diabetes is one of them. The past few months I've had to urinate a number of times during the day, probably almost 10 times/day even, ever so often. Forgive me for being specific, but I don't know how else to go about it ... It's not uncontrollable, it's just often. I do like coffee, but I always have and even when I don't drink a lot of liquids, I seem to have to pee a lot! There is no uncomfortable sensation, so that pretty much rules out kidney disease and infection (I'm not sexually active, either). So, I'm left thinking, why is this?

I looked up the other symptoms of diabetes ... I don't really get thirsty or especially hungry that often. However, I have lost a lot of weight in the past year -- but I attributed that to my new, modest diet. I basically, just, don't eat as much as I used to. Still, my weight has seemed to stay, mostly, the same even when I do up my food intake. As far as fatigue goes, I do get tired sometimes (as we all do!), but I am somewhat of a mellow person to begin with and of course, I'm a COLLEGE STUDENT! Also, I've never skipped a period before, though one a few months ago I was unusually late -- first time that's ever happened before.

Sorry for sharing so many details, but I don't see how anyone can be of help, if I don't.

So anyhow, the possibility of diabetes definitely frightens me and I've now decided I should investigate it, because I am only 20 and so that would mean it'd probably be Type 1. Eeks! I'm just very restless about it this evening, now that I've entertainined the idea.

If anyone can remember what it was like right before they got diagnosed, I'd appreciate any help.

Basically, if anyone can tell me about things I should look out for, or if you think I'm overreacting, that'd be great!!!

========
Laura, I added a subject to your post to help others find it.

Oh, and to add!

Just to give as much info as possible...

My eyesight is "okay", it can be pretty blurry at night, but of course, I'm nearsighted.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Laurakj07,

It's always best to get this checked out at your doctors if you are worried.  There are plenty of reasons why you may need to go to the loo a lot, and as far as I know caffeine in the coffee may make you need to go more often than usual.  I have t1 diabetes and when I was first diagnosed I was going to the loo a lot but also was drinking a huge amount of liquids too (your body is very dehydrated but can't keep the liquids in) so if you were diabetic I'd imagine you'd be increasingly thirsty but unable to quench it, which you've said you are not.  I also was down to about 5 stone in weight (that's about 70lbs), eyes very blurry, constantly VERY tired and just always feeling very ill.  The other symptoms you have (i.e. period being late) can be due to stress, but I urge you to get this all checked out at your doctors.  This will mean you either get your mind put to rest, or if you do have diabetes that it's caught early.  Another thing, I know someone who needs to go to the loo a lot but it's due to anxiety.

Good luck, and keep us informed!

Claire x

Hi Laura,

Claire is right on the money.  You probably aren't diabetic even though the symptom appears to be there.  Im type 2 and when I was initially diagnosed I had gotten to the point where I had to go unrinate every half hour.  And I was drinking gallons of water to boot.  I didn't have the blurry vision but I did have a small spot of neuropathy on one foot, but the real clue for me was the urination.  Sudden weight loss or the ablility to stay "thin" often times accompanies type 2 diabetes as it did in my case.

Without the unbridled thrist, and some of the other accompaning symptoms, a good guess would be something else is causing your problem, but the best person to diagnose this is a doctor.  If you fast for 8 hours before you go see your doctor they can do a blood test on you right on the spot and see where your blood sugars are at. (they can also check a number of other important things in your blood if you've not eaten).

Just to add my 2ยข the test for diabetes is very quick and simple. Don't eat anything after 9pm at night and trot yourself over to the health center in the morning for a blood draw. Sometimes the docs at the health centers aren't exactly the 'pick of the litter' if you know what I mean, but tell them you are worried about diabetes.

Other causes of frequent urination can be bladder infections and kidney stones. Both of my daughters showed up with kidney stones while in college (they run in our family.) Doc should also do a urinalysis and may run a culture and sensitivity (if you have a bladder infection it shows them which antibiotic is most effective.)

Hope this helps.

I have been doing a lot of research on this subject of pee. It is possible to have the other types of diabetes, I had tolook at some other cause. My other health problems make it imposible for me to have diabetes 1 o 2. But, there is another form of diabetes. It's called Diabetes Innisidus. This might be something you might want to look in to. There are a lot of reasons we loose to much fluid don't get nervous.

Shelly, I think you mean diabetes insipidus, a condition of the kidneys not related to diabetes mellitus. Since you picked up this thread which is nearly 3 years old, I don't think the original poster has been here lately.  As always, it's best to see your doctor when you have symptoms such as frequent urination as this might be another disorder, not just diabetes mellitis.

Sometimes frequent urination can be caused by medication you might be taking. You didn't say if you were taking any meds or not.  My husband is on a blood pressure pill that part of its function is to eliminate excess water in the body. He takes it with his breakfast about 5:30AM and by seven he starts his routine of needing to pee (sometimes very badly) every hour at least, somtimes more.  This lasts until the med evens off about ten thirty or eleven.  He does drink liquids in the AM. A glass of juice with his cereal which has milk on it along with a soda around eight or so.  I know other meds can have a similar effect on some people.  This said you should still get it checked out by your doctor.
