Lately after having an ICD implanted (pacemaker/defibrillator) I have had problems with keeping my blood sugars under control. I have strayed away from sweets and try to watch my diet very carefully. While in the hospital they had to give me at least 2 units of insulin just before lunch because my blood sugars would be over 200. Ever since then I have been having trouble getting my blood sugars down during the day. Sometimes @ night I will have a low blood sugar. I'm not sure what to do here.

I know when my sugars go low at night it is because I have not had enough carbohydrates for dinner. Also,if you are in  a hospital you are probably not getting as much exersize as usual. This might account for your high sugars during the day.

Just some thoughts. Hope they help. :-)

I talked to my doctors office today and they said to increase my glucovance in the morning and see how I do then. I'll let you know how it goes.

Ancientstar,

Are you on any other diabetic meds besides glucovance? How many carbs are you having with breakfast? Lunch?

One of the things I have found to help keep my sugars stable during the day is sugar-free psyllium fiber. I take a tablespoon in water after breakfast or lunch especially if I have had too many carbs. Psyllium has been shown to moderate high sugars and prolong absorption time of carbs in the intestines. It also aids in digestion and regularity. It's inexpensive and very 'natural'. For a more complete posting about this please visit this link.
