smurf  hey just wondering if anyone has had some good results w/ Avandia. I am still taking glyburide and metformin. I am a type 2 diabetic, diagnosed about 2 months ago.  Still trying to deal w/ all these pills, diet and blood glucose monitoring, any advice would be greatly appreciated . Take care

oooo a smurfette!  Hi Tanya,

I used to use Avandia and its a really potent drug.  The thing about Avandia is that you may not see the results you want or need in the first few days you take it as it typically takes about 14+ days for it to reach its full potential (effect) in your body.  Typically when metformin begins to become less and less effective, doctors prescribe Avandia in tandem, and it can alter your BS dramatically.

One of the side effects of Avandia is bloating or water retention, specifically in the legs. This happened to me and it was frustrating, but my doctor prescribed me a water pill and told me that for the drop in BS I was getting from the increased insulin sensitivity, the bloating was a small price to pay and we could possibly fix that.

Well, ya know, for once I agreed with my doc!  Good stuff Avandia.

PS - I now use Byetta and it has allowed me to dump the Avandia completely.  I now use metformin and glipizide in conjuction with 10mcg of Byetta and I've got great numbers. In fact I've been able to cut my dosage in half vs. what it was before the Byetta! (do I sound like a commercial for Byetta?)

I use a generic of Avandia and it has worked fine for me. One thing I would recommend Tanya is that you purchase a set of 'pill boxes' from the dollar store. I usually fill mine four weeks at a time so I know right away if I'm running low on a med. I put all of my diabetic meds, my water pill, vitamins, calcium supplement, flax seed oil and fish oil and the rest of the junk I'm taking into these and put them at my bedside. First thing in the morning I open the correct box for today and take them all at once. Last thing at night, same thing. It simplifies matters, especially if I want to go out of town for a day or so... I just grab the correct day's pill boxes and pack them. No need to take all those bottles along. Hope this helps.

Hi there,

Iam on Avandia 2mg twice daily. My doctor put me on this drug,as i was overweight and he said my insulin resistance is proportionately high and Avandia will help me a lot and it did!I lost about 12 kgs weight through exercise and rigid diet control and though iam tipping on the overweight side my numbers are really great. He made me undergo a complete heart check to rule out any cardiac problems as he said water retention should not be taken lightly as it may be un-covering an underlying cardiac problem which he said is the recent thinking.Thank God my cardiac check came out fine!Hope i could be of help. :-) My doctor is very communicative, isn't he?
