I have just started this week using Hoodia to suppress my appetite after my evening meal. So far it works just find. The time between eating and bedtime is my downfall. It is almost to the point of being uncontrollable.

Has anyone any experience using Hoodia when weight loss is not the objective? I don't take it before eating becaues my meals are just what they should be - that is not the problem. The problem is the 'chiping' and general hand to mouth that happens after dark.....

Desert,
One of the strongest symptoms of diabetes is hunger after eating... because the insulin you produce is not getting the glucose into your cells so they are screaming, "Feed me!" even though you just ate...

I used to have this problem for years and the meds helped a little. This finally disappeared when I went on Lantus insulin. It's a long acting insulin and it helped me utilize the glucose in my blood stream so I don't feel hungry between meals. (It may be time for insulin for you.)

about Hoodia, the real stuff is very rare and there are a lot of companies selling fake or low content capsules. Please don't be taken in by unscrupulous sales people. It does suppress appetite so you may have the real deal or you may be experiencing the placebo effect... Either way, I'm glad it helps you.

I have heard of Hoodia and read articles about it. I wouldb be careful using natural supplements bcuz not all of them interact correctly with other meds. Case in point, I take Centrum silver and verapamil. last nite i did a drug tracker and discovered they can't be taken together bcuz of the calcuium in the verapamil. The tracker said that the multi-vitamin would satuarate the calcium channels with calcium and make the verapamil ineffective.

I know as a diabetic we have to try things that will aide in our disease. Good luck. just my 2-cents

Well, if my positive results are just placebo effect that would be okay with me - except for expense. Whatever it takes to keep me from my goals. As far as being ready for insulin that is not the case yet. i maintain in the low 5's or high 4's on my A1c if I maintain my diet/exercise plan without the between meals problem. I take only 500mg Metformin 3X and 2mg 2X. I discussed this with my doctor this week - I discussed an idea I heard recently by an Endo how type 2's in good control can inject small doses of insulin(one half unit) to give the beta cells a break. This doctor said that it has been shown to actually increase insulin output. Beta cells that were weak and not producing insulin started to produce again. Avandia has been shown to produce this same affect, to some degree. I ask about increasing my doses of Metformin but he did not like that idea as I still respond very well to the doses i am on. I will see him again in 10 days to get my lab results - maybe I can find out more about it for him.

As far as the hoodia goes the jury is still out on that.

My A1c's have almost always been at 5.5... But my morning readings were the thing that put me on increased meds and eventually insulin. I can get great glycohemoglobins and when you look at my meter you would swear it's not the same person. I do find that the Advandia helped and the generic from India works better than the American version.... go figure?

Desert, congrats on your a1c being in the 4s or 4s. That is some feat., and I know only one other person in that range, my elderly walking partner. My a1c is always in the higher 5s and low 7s, but that is bcuz of my bp meds. My diuiretics (hctz) raises my cholesterol and glucose, once Im off it, I hope to see 4s and 5s.

I think you're doing good, especially not having to take insulin. Way to go!

jtu91952 - let me clarify something. I can control in the low 5's and have seen high 4's recently - but, becuase of my hand to mouth addiction my last one was up a lot. I know it will be down now becasue of the hoodia(and the chain i lock my wrists to my waist). I check before and after meals and my blood sugars just don't go up buit a very little. I have meals down to a science, for me anyway. I just done' that the snacks and this and that under control as yet.

The thing about different meds is just what you say, no matter what you do you will be higher, or lower than you want to be, or should normally be. They don't always add the truth to what they mean by you can control by diet and exercise only or with meds. Sometimes you just cannot control for different reasons, it just isn't that simple of a situation.

I have got my thinking where if i have to inject insulin it will be no big thing. Not that it won't be a letdown and be quite a change, because it will. But, because insulin in a natural substance for the body and really no different than the medications in that it is part of treating diabetes. Actually, better than medications because it is what the body needs while the meds artifically help you.

Just an update -

Hoodia does work for me - it does suppress my appetite like it says it does. Okay, now what do I do for the mental appetite? I tell myself "I am not hungry," and I'm not hungry. But, and there is always a but, there is still a drive to eat something. Not as strong and can be pretty much controlled just by backing away from the food. My brain steps in and becomes a cop, "You, food criminal, back away from the food, NOW." And then again then sometimes crimes happen! I have not had very much between meals, it just stands out considering I am working so hard not to. I think this will subside as time passes..... I am right at the begening of getting my house refi'd. Actually, this morning I have to call and lock the rate in. That gives me only 21 days to finish the work on my kitchen and put in the floors. Three weeks is a long time, you say.l You would not say that if you were in my body.
