Is there a correlation between diabetes and kidney stones?

My type 2 diabetes dx was in 2003 - kidney stone found in 2004, 2005, and again yesterday!  3 stones in 3 years - surely that's unusual.  Waiting now for another appointment for lithotripsy.
All 3 stones have been in the left kidney and have been found before causing pain - actually, I've had no symptoms at all.

Any insights?    Thanks!  :-)

I had a kidney stone once every 3 years for 12 years then when I was diagnosed with diabetes and started taking meds, no stones!!  Makes you wonder if theres a link between high blood sugar and the ability to produce stones.  I just wrote it off as genetic as my dad and my sister had both had stones!

When I was in the recovery room after an extensive kidney surgery to remove a 2.5 cm stone my mom greeted me with the words, "Your Aunt Frances had 17 kidney stone surgeries...." Not what I wanted to hear!!! I have had two removed surgically and passed three at home. They are all calcium oxalate stones.

I went to a nephrologist who started me on 25mg of hydrochlorothyazide (Hydrodiuil) every day. One of the side effects of this medication is that it helps retain calcium in the bloodstream so it doesn't spill over into the urine. This worked for about 12 years when he decided to reduce the dosage to 12.5mg. Within a year I made and passed a new stone so we went back up to 25mg.

If you are making calcium oxalate stones you may want to discuss this treatment option with your doctor. Both of my brothers are also now taking the Hydrodiuril every day and their stones have stopped forming as well.

Ouch Jeannie!  Another really good home remedy (one that was actually proven at University of Pennsylvania) is to take Magnesium.  I take "chelated magnesium" tablets.  They make it so the calcuim in your system is bound by the magnesium and not absorbed, and it really really prevents kidneystones!  My sister read the article, tried it and no more kidney stones, passed the info to me and VOILA, it worked for me too!

Its maybe not as potent a cure as what you are taking but for a vast majority of people with calcium based stones, magnesium every day can do the trick.
