Ok, I have lots of good ideas for peeps to stay ahead of the game with this diabetes thing, and I've learned lots from all of you, too, but sometimes I am so dumb that the cows could eat me!
Yesterday I had what seems to be a 24 hour stomach virus. Alternated between sleep and spending my life in the toilet. I'm better today but I realize at some point yesterday that I have absolutely no idea what to do when I'm sick! DUH!
Didn't want to eat anything, took my morning meds, forgot about
my Lantus last night, had some bouillon and soda crackers in the evening...
Anyway... to make a long story short, this morning I called the nutritionist at the hospital where I took my classes and asked her what I should have done. She mentioned staying on all meds and sipping regular
soda (the kind with sugar!) to keep my sugar levels in a safe zone because my body was still operating off of the Lantus from the previous night. She also mentioned testing every few hours to assure that I wasn't bottoming out.
I told her that I wasn't very alert
and probably would have forgotten to test but she said for the one or two days I was ill, better to have real pop and a little bit elevated sugar levels than to be sleeping and bottom out and have no one notice. She is putting some information into the mail for me and when I get it I'll be sure to share it all with you peeps. In the meantime, could you all post what your nutritionist or doctor has advised you to do when ill? We should all have an emergency plan in place and yesterday really pointed that out to me.
