When I took my first diabetes nutrition class our educator told us that the disease causes our bodies to store energy as fat before putting it into the cells who need the calories. In other words, the diabetes has an anti-famine mechanism that goes into effect before regular nutritional needs are met. This leads to the obesity that leads to increased insulin resistance that turns into a vicious cycle.
I guess the surgery would put the body into famine mode and make it reverse the cycle... but I've seen so many of these surgeries fail... It's a bit scary for me.
"People are like stained glass windows: They sparkle and shine when the sun's out, but when the darkness sets in, their true beauty is revealed only if there is light within."
