My doctor wants me to do the 4 hour glucose fasting test where you drink a sugary drink and they draw you're blood every hour for 4 hours to see if I am insulin resistant.  I am freaking about this test because the lab said most people get really sick.  Has anyone had it done and did you get sick?

I took the fasting test. I thought it was gross and gagged it, but I didn't get really sick in any way from it. Of course I can gag just thinking about gross things, and as tests go, it's not so bad. It's a lot easier than preparing for a colonoscopy for example. The important thing to focus on is the result. Good luck to you and I hope you get a normal BG count as your test result! sandy

Hi -

My last one like that was a year and a half ago. While the stuff tasted like orange soda with WAAAAAAAAY too much sugar in it, it wasn't horrid. I distinctly remember feeling very sick about four hours into the test because I needed to eat! I was dizzy and shaky ... symptoms that only helped confirm that I was diabetic!!!
Cheers -

That doesn't sound very pleasant.  That is what I am worried about.  I have IBS so my stomach is very sensitive and it could take days to get it back in order.  My doctor thinks I may have insulin resistance and wants me to take the test and I am reluctant to do it.   If it comes out positive, he will suggest meds and I don't want to go down that route.  I bought some natural stuff from the health food store to see if that would resolve the problem and see if I can avoid meds.  If not, then we'll see what happens.  The lab techs kept saying a lot of people get real sick, dizzy and then very drowsy.  My concern is my stomach.
