And I just posted a message (in another topic) saying that I thought my Glucophage was no longer effective (been taking it for 6 years).  It could very well be the HCT in my Diovan.  I started with the HCT type a few months ago.  Before that it was the non-hct type I was taking.

Talldude, I can't thank you enough for starting this thread. I went to my endocrinologist this am for my six-month visit and he confirmed that HCT in high blood press. tabs will raise blood sugar levels. And to think that my cardiologist knew I was diabetic and on glucophage and yet he switched me from the regular diovan to the hct type for better control of my pressure. He is now my ex-cardiologist. What the heck happens to people who don't read forums and rely solely on their doctors!!!!!

I'm hoping now to get my sugar reading back down to where I feel comfortable. Hope it doesn't take too long.

Well it's too soon to tell for me, (last night was the first BP med. without HCT) but this am was a low reading that I had not had in 19 days AND I forgot to do my 1-mile walk yesterday AND went to a house party last night and ate some extra stuff that I would not have ordinarily - though I always try to be careful what I eat, AND had two glasses of red wine. So I'm hopeful.

Hey Talldude .... thanks for posting that link. I looked at it this morning and have bookmarked it for further reference as needed. Your numbers are so improved ... GO YOU! :-)

Just an update - it has been five days now since I came of the HCT bp meds and apart from one day when I ate a Subway sub my morning fasting readings are more in line with what I would expect.  I've very hopeful that my readings will get back to what is normal for me.

Talldude, I owe you a cold one at the very least for starting this thread.  If ever you are going to be in the Tampa area let me know. yeah

Way to go Talldude! tongue    Are you exercising too or is this just from stopping whatever pills you were taking that had HCT?
Unfortnately I cannot stop taking my glucophage but my numbers are still where I expect them to be, now that I've stopped the BP pills that had HCT.  The next few days will be tough with all the goodies I'll encounter during house visits.
BTW, you know you can get the "sugar free" version of those peppermint patties at your local Walmart.

No it wasn't, but just as bad - was the cardiologist (now my ex-cardiologist).  And on my charts at every visit, the tech goes through my list and verifies if I'm still taking "this and that" including the glucophage.  I shudder to think how many other patients are "led down the wrong path" and follow it blindly.

Cindy, what is your HCT in and why are you having to take it?  In my case it was in my blood pressure pill.  I've had type 2 diabetes for 6 years now but am managing to control it with exercise and diet (until my ex-cardiologist put me on the HCT bp meds, which I've stopped taking as of Dec. 15th and reverted to the non hct type).  My numbers are now in the normal, for me, range.  Let's not go ballistic here, I'm sure there are some benefits to having hct in some meds, but certainly not for diabetics.
