HI,

Anyones input would be appreciated, when I was diagnosed with diabetes I had a 5.0 c-peptide level, recently at at check up I my c-Peptide level was 2.7, was wondering, what they stand for, and is the lower level a positive thing?

C-peptide is a by product of producing natural insulin.  It is not present in injected insulin.  So, by measuring c-peptide you are measuring how much of your own insulin you still produce.  If the number is dropping it means you are producing less insulin of your own.  So, a lower c-peptide level is not a good thing, but it isn't the end of the world either.

c peptides is very useful for diabetics who rely on diet and tablets as many of these sufferers are actually making more insulin than normal but have become resistant to it and cant make normal use of it

Older diabetes specialists are often unaware of insulin resinstance and make no attempt to deal with it, instead getting the diabetic to inject insulin, when the tablets they prescribe, ie the wrong type, no longer give enough control

metformin is best for insulin resistance, far as I know

my local GP doc refused my request for a c peptides test, saying it was of no importance, so I fired him and went elsewhere

Judy - just wondering how old you are - my husband is newly diagnosed also with type 1. He is 35, we were scared at first but we are coming to terms with all of this.

HI Zazi,

It does take time to come to terms with it but remember that today we are lucky to have the tools, pumps, glucose monitors.. to deal with this, it is difficult in the begining but will your support your husband should make it, just learn as much as you can, your nutritionist knows much more usually than the PCP or the Endo, Good Luck, I am 40, and have had gestational diabestes twice and now I have Lyme Disease that must have stressed my body so diabestes is back!
