Hi,  Last Sat. my grandson who is almost 14 went to two parties.  The first one was a bowling party, and I was not there.  Then he went to another party, this was one where there was extreme activity, two rooms filled with those big  bounce things.  He was very active and worked up a considerable sweat.  Towards the end he started to get sick.  At that time I did not know he ate the pizza at the bowling alley, so I thought perhaps his sugar had gone real low because he  had not eaten.  He is not diagnosed diabetic, but I thought I would check, as he is not obese but he is overweight for his age and height.  Well his sugar was 148.  I did find out he did eat pizza at the bowling alley, and I am not sure about soft drinks.  What I am asking in this long preview of events is..........................should I be concerned?  Can normal people get blood sugars in that count after exercise, and having eaten pizza, and perhaps soda?  Thanks, Donna

Yes, Donna, they do go that high and then drop back down in about two hours after they stop eating. The difference between us and them is that ours stay high and theirs go right back down. Pizza would keep it up for a while as the bread moves thru his system and the soda that I'll bet he was drinking would spike it a lot. Also, a lot of the kids these days drink those 'power' drinks which contain extra sugar and extra caffine, both of which will spike your sugars whether you're a diabetic or a normal. He probably just overdid and got sick, like a normal kid.

I'd sure feel sick if I ate pizza and pop then "bounced" around for a couple hours :-)

The elevated blood sugars are not that high but they are slightly "out of range" for a "normal" non-diabetic person. As Jeannie says, he probably just overdid it. Do take some further tests if you are concerned.
