I made certain to wash my hands this morning before testing and was 112 ... which is HIGH for me. I retested immediately and was 95.

Has anyone ever just retested to double check a score??? Do people usually get the same number?? This just seems crazy to me.

I've taken melatonin the past two nighs because I can't sleep ... so there are two variables. Melatonin and new strips.

I'll call the doctor tomorrow but GEESH.
Cheers -

Hi Ruth, that's so annoying to have the high numbers again if you hadn't changed your diet or activity.  I'd stop taking the melatonin especially if the numbers rose after taking it to sleep.  Try Benedryl antihistamine instead - or the generic that most stores have, like Target, WalMart, Kroger.   A nurse once suggested that to me because it's not habit-forming and it doesn't interact with other medicine.  Make sure it's only the antihistamine product, not the decongestant combination.  Dramamine has the same ingredient by the way.  I've taken one capsule about an hour before I plan to go to bed and it has never affected my morning readings.  Good luck!

I have retested before and gotten different numbers. Ruth, you have to remember that the numbers are guidelines, not absolutes. Try looking at just the 10's part of it. What I mean is, you're in the 90's or the 110's or the 230's (gasp!) not the actual number. And the next time you go to the doctor as well as the next time you have a blood draw you should test with your meter at the same time. Record those numbers and when you get the results back from the lab see how close your meter was. If it's way off base I would write to the company and ask for a replacement meter. They will most likely give you one since they want you to keep buying their strips.

Just a thought, but have you checked your meter with fresh testing solution to be sure it's ok?

Remember that your meter can vary by as much as 20% - so if you tested at 112 you could actually be +/- 22 so you might see 90 - 134. 95 is right in that range. I frequently double or even triple test if I get an unexpected reading. This morning I got 140!!!!!! 98 and 104- same finger, same stab, three different drops of blood- no hand washing or drying in-between.

Go figure! I have been testing a lot lately because my doctor wants me to switch over to Januvia and I am doing so on a trial basis. Most of the time, my numbers are right where I expect them to be, but if they are not- I at least double test and have found that they usually agree within a couple of points. I want the documentation to be as complete as possible when I go in for my A1c at the end of June so that we can make a good decision about whether or not to continue.

Don't worry too much- your numbers are still ok.
