I am so confused right now with my morning reading.  I did NOTHING different yesterday then I normally do and wake up with a reading of 189.  It makes me so angry.  I would rather gain 10 pounds then have a high reading.  My levels in the AM have been running around 120-140.  Oh well just wanted to vent.  Thanks for listening.

Patti,
I see from your previous posts you are on byetta. I'm not totally up on how it works but I do have some questions for you.
• Do you keep a food, med and exercise journal?
• Are you on a specific food plan that includes a bedtime snack?
• Have you shown symptoms of the "Dawn Phenomenon" in the past?

There are a number of things that can spike your morning numbers and if you would start keeping track of your glucose readings and food consumed as well as the times we might be able to help you sort this thing out.

I've been a diagnosed diabetic for over 12 years and probably had it for about 30... I'm still learning all this stuff and figuring out how it works. Just the other day I found out that if I eat a banana with about two tablespoons of peanut butter at bedtime I get a morning number of 79 - 95. I stumbled on this for myself quite by accident. If dawn phenomenon is one of your glucose conditions then you could start experimenting with a bedtime snack that may help.

Thanks both of you. I did not have any snack last nite. Sometimes I will eat a handful of pretzels or nuts. Most of the time though I'm not really hungry. I have not had a reading this high in the morning since I started being good.
I'm really confused about carbs...can anyone tell me what is the amount of carbs you should eat during an entire day? And also does fruit contain alot of carbs?
Thanks
Patti

Hi Patti,

I can only tell you what works (mostly) for ME as diabetes seems to really be an individualized disease! I know the more carbs I eat the higher my blood sugar numbers. I can NEVER, EVER eat pretzels and really have (just today) kind of vowed off nuts .. if only because it's so hard for me "to eat just one!"

Are you on medications? If so, please post what they are and those on the same med will chime right in!

I have to be VERY careful with fruits as some of them are REALLY high in carbs. I usually stick to the occasional berry! Here's a link I use to see how many carbs individual foods may have : http://www.carb-counter.org/

I really don't count my daily carb intake but I can sure bet it's less than 30!!! Some days I bet I don't eat 20!

Patti,
If your doc started you on byetta without a nutrition class you ought to give him/her 40 lashes with a wet noodle! If you have insurance call the office and get a class ordered pronto! Heck, I've had two of them in the past 12 years and I still don't have all of this figured out.

If you don't have insurance then I'll have to do some digging in the past posts about nutrition to get you started. In the mean time there are some good books at the library... and you may find it easier to start with a book from the teen section.

Hi,

My doc tried to send me to a nutrition class.... twice. But.... I can't afford it. With my insurance, it would cost $500, so I came here first, and then did a lot of reading on the web. I read up on carbs at those carb counter sites. The only carbs I eat often is sugar free toast, DREAMFIELDS pasta (which I read about here... YUM) (I hope that wet noodle was a dreamfields noodle LOL) and brown rice. As a treat, once in a while, I'll have ONE pancake with sugar free syrup, but that's just once in a while. And I've had to give up my sugar free candy sad as it messes with my numbers. Oh, and I do eat beans sometimes too. If my sugar is low, I'll have about 1/3 of an apple....

Yeah, I hate this too! But at least I'm trying.......
