confused  Hi,

I know this is kind of gross, but I am wondering why my urine has been smelling kind of fruity/sweet the past couple of days. This has happened before, before my diagnosis was confirmed. I googled the symptom, and found somewhere that it is a sign of diabetes or starvation (I'm definitely not starving lol). My sugars are in normal range... low 100's mostly the past couple of days and even a little lower a couple of times. Does this mean that my sugars are really bad????????? I'm worried sad . Has anyone else ever had this happen?

Hi Bear, I'd always read about the "sweet" smell related to diabetes, too, but if you're controlling your blood sugar maybe it's something else.  Have you eaten asparagus lately?  That sometimes causes a particular smell.  Or, maybe you need to drink more water.  You might be dehydrated, so the urine is very concentrated.  Maybe you can get lower readings though.  You could call your doctor and have it checked out to find out what it really is?

Hi Lanie,

Thanks for the quick reply. I really was getting worried. I haven't had any asparagus recently, but I had broccoli last night. Maybe I overdid the carbs over the weekend???? My sugars aren't that high, my fasting BG this morning was 110, yesterday's readings were between 102 - 114. I know I can do better...

As far as other causes, I have had a long history of bladder infections in my life, and I can tell immediately when I'm getting one. If I'm coming down with a cold or any illness, that's my first symptom. I'm not having any frequency or other symptoms of infection, although about a month ago I was (this was right before I came down with strep throat), and doc did a urine culture and it came back normal. My next checkup is July 6th, and I will ask her then, but hopefully it will stop before that. (The testing is going to cost a LOT, so I'm stressed already about that, as I haven't even paid off my last batch of tests from April yet.)

I'm really hoping that this doesn't mean my kidneys are being affected by the diabetes...

Hi ..

I'd agree with Lanie your sugars are in "the range." What color was your urine? Was it clear and light or dark/cloudy? The latter might indicate either an infection somewhere or dehydration. In any event .... start by drinking more water and see what happens!

Hi Ruth,

The color is light and clear. It seems normal other than the faint fruity smell. I have no clue.... I hope my kidneys are ok confused confused confused

Hmm, that's right, Ruth.  Sometimes infections can cause that.  Bear, if you're sure it's not an infection, then, do drink more water.  I don't think it's the broccoli, but some food might cause different smells anyway.  I also worry about the kidneys and just last week, I started to drink more water than I've been doing.  Hope everything is ok otherwise.

Hi Bear...Is it all day, every day for the past while? Or perhaps a particular time of day (i.e. morning)?

The reason I ask is because I might think that it's related to food if it's particular to a certain time. A constant odour might mean something else is going on. When I was running really high sugars for a long period of time (before Dx), I had more fruity breath than fruity urine.

I have one pee a day that smells like the one coffe a day I drink.

Your sugars are in the 100's? Are they below 120 (fasting & pre-meal)? What time of day do you test?

Hi Phishbowl,

Thanks for your reply. I've noticed it mostly in the morning or if I wake up in the middle of the night, not really during the day. My fasting bg numbers have all been below 120, and my other readings during the day are usually lower than fasting #s. I test 2 to 3 x a day, once when I wake up, once when I get home from work in the afternoon and one 2 hours after dinner (usually). All my numbers have been pretty good, usually in the 90's or low 100. The highest ones are in the morning.

Bear :-)

I have noticed that after, but not during, a time when I am high my urine smells like the cereal Sugar Pops or Honey Smacks. It usually happens a couple hours after the high reading has passed.

Hi,

I think my hubby figured it out. We bought a canteloupe... duh. I was having a couple of slices for the past couple of days. I think it was messing with my sugar and maybe causing this too. My sugar was way too high this morning, 123. I told hubby when he came home frome work and told him ... "all we had was chicken and salad..". That's when he reminded me of the canteloupe. Silly me.... I don't know enough about this diabetes yet to make good choices regarding fruit!! No more melon for me!

I'm bumping this up for Bam66. Hi Bam, I still get this on and off, although I think the fruit set it off the last time. I'm pretty careful but it still happens sometimes.
