I've been really following the very low carb thing that I found on this site, got Dr. Berstein's book, tested, tested, tested, and my numbers are really going down!!! I'm not consistently at 85-90 yet, but I'm there more than I'm not. In fact, have had a couple of hypo episodes in the early early morning, so am going to cut back my night metformin a bit...doc said if this started happening to do so. I just want to thank you all for the diet info and let you know how well it is working. :-) yeah

Good for you, Tutorgirl!  That's a great feeling to have control.  Be sure to keep the doctor informed of your progress, too.

Nice one, tutorgirl!

I knew you were a fast learner, but this is ridiculous. You've found the formula for success that some of us have taken years to track down. Why couldn't you have told us sooner!!!!!

All the best,

Hey, you guys need to take the credit for your years of research! If it hadn't been for me stumbling on to this site I would still be doing the diabetic exchange diet and wondering why I couldn't get my glucose numbers down without resorting the the full strength of the byetta which makes me terribly ill. This site indeed has been a lifesaver. And, Lanie, I have an appointment with my doc in September after blood work so that we can discuss all of this and decide what next. She had already given me permission to lower my oral meds when numbers started getting too low. So not to worry. As my son would say, "It's all good." :)

Omigosh, hey.  "Years of research"?  That's would be Fergusc's department.  I'm pretty new at this.  I bumbled around for months until I figured out carbs are bad for my blood sugar.  Fergusc suggested Dr. Bernstein's book and I ran out and bought it in the spring.  I'm also due to see my doctor again at the end of September or early October and if my lab tests are as good as or better than the ones in May, I'm going to give my dear doctor an education in diabetes nutrition.  She's a GP, a very good doctor, but not an endocrinologist.  I will respectfully inform her how my lab results are so much better.  (And then what will she do with all the literature from the ADA and the AHA?)  Oh well. That's fantastic news, Tutorgirl yeah

Good Luck with that Lanie!

I find that most of them aren't interested in being educated about nutrition, and will try and justify your results according to their own beliefs. I think an endo would give you a harder time about this than your GP. The one I got referred to was so rigid, he could break in two during a strong wind. im sure he hit my file with the big red non compliant patient stamper as I walked out the door -lol

I'm hoping mine will be impressed with all of this. I know that she is really in favor of the South Beach diet for diabetics and she's been after me to lose weight for years, and right now I'm down almost 16 lbs. since I saw her in June. The week I was on the byetta 10 mcg. pen accounts for 10 of that, but...I haven't put any back on and since the start of the low carb thing I've taken more off. I'd like to be down another 6 when I see her on the 17th. I think she is the type that if I find something that brings down everything she's going to go along with it. I really like her...gone to her for 13 or 14 years. I just wished she worked more that 2 1/2 days a week. Anyway, Lanie, we will compare notes on docs after our visits and let you know, gelchick, how they react.

Hi Sandy and Tutorgirl, well, I'm hoping my lab results will continue to be good, and if they are, I will just have to be honest with my doctor and explain what I've been eating and what I haven't been.  When I was in her office in May, all she knew was that I'd lost weight but she couldn't have known the lab results when I saw her.  She wrote 'outstanding' and 'excellent' on the copy of the lab tests sent to me in the mail afterwards, but I hadn't explained to her details of my diet.  I understand that she would be in a strange postion to tell patients not to follow the standard medical field's advice for diet, not to adhere to the ADA.  I guess I don't expect her to turn and say it's all garbage, but at least she'll know how I got to the point where I lowered my blood sugar readings, the A1c and the cholesterol.  Hmm.  I'm trying to envision now what she'll say and the look on her face.
:-)
