Everyone who's on metformin or who's ever been, I'm creating this to gather some information, experience, help, pointers, suggestions, anything for one of our newest members, Mamo.  Your input is really appreciated, thanks a lot!

Hi Lanie

There's lot of info about metformin around. I've taken it since my Dx- it has never given me any problems. I always take it with food. I take it with breakfast and dinner. Also before bed to help with the Dawn effect (2000 mg total). Some generics smell like rotting fish (from my WalMart), others are virtually odor free.

I have been taking it for a while as well. Works well for me but I can't eat too many carbs with it or I get horrible diarrhea. It's a good med that enhances your body's ability to utilize it's own insulin.

I've been on it for about 6 months. I was taking 2 pills but because it caused gastro problems by GI wanted me off them. My Endo didn't, so they compromised on just 1 a day. My BG has been so good the last few months that my Endo wants me now to cut in half and to see if we can wean totally off it. My HA1c was 5.6 last week. Other that gastro problems, which we don't know if it's caused by my crohn's, IBS or Meds, the only other problems I had was muscle weakness while exercising.

I've been on Metformin for years...long enough that I can't remember how long. I periodically have problems with diarrhea with it , but nothing that Immodium can't handle. As far as the losing weight with it...I have never heard that and that has definitely not been my experience. I think the prevailing opinion is that most diabetic meds put weight on you with the exception of these new class of meds that have to do with slowing the emptying the of the stomach (like byetta and symlin). The only way I have been able to start losing weight and getting my blood sugars under control is to follow the low carb diet like so many of them do here. Hand to God...it totally works. :yeah. Hope this helps.

Thanks so mch for all the advice on this med. My neice has who is a RN has been keeping a close eye on me and she told me today that one of her best friends husband is on this same med and he was a really heavy guy but she said he is so skinny now. He is still on it. But she said you have to watch your diet and have a low carb intake also.
So we will see I am going to have to loose some weight for sure and I am trying, my Dr said I had a good outlook on it and with having already lost weight she knows I can get it under control. She said I have the right attitude.
Thanks again

My bllod sugars has been in the 114 early morning, during the day it might go up to 144 but this afternoon 2 hrs after eating it was 84??

I'm on a really low dose, and only once a day, so I haven't had any side effects. I started out on double the dose, but felt weak on my low carb diet, so doc cut it in half. Since then I haven't had any problems.

My daughter takes metformin. She has never had any problems with it but I do understand that gastro symptoms are very common. She takes 850 twice a day with meals. Her blood sugars have stayed pretty consistantly 85-115. She has been losing weight since being on it but she also has been sticking very strictly to her diet. Her weightloss probably has a lot to do with her diet but could be a little of both.
