Hello everyone. I’m new here. My mom has been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. She’d really like to control it with natural supplements (as much as possible). Does anyone have any suggestions?

kclay: I am a type 2 diabetic and have controlled my disease for 7 years with natural remedies. In my opinion if you can control with nautural remedies you are much better off as natural remedies do not have the side effects as prescription meds.

I started 6 months ago seeing a homepathic doctor that specializes in nutrional therapy and that has been a good investment on my part. He added some minerals and vitamins to my protocol that I was not taking before seeing him and it has made tremendous difference in the way I feel. My last visit last week, blood test were drawn and the results came back normal for everything.

One very important thing for diabetics is diet. I do not eat any fried foods, no starch such as potatoes, white bread etc. no dried fruit and limited amount of fresh fruit. I eliminated coffee and had a blood test for food allergies and eliminated all that I was allergic to.

There are a lot of web sites that can provide info on alternative medicine and I would suggest you seek out the information about the natural remedies and if possible see a doctor that specializes in natural remedies. It would be much easier if you do not have the knowledge yourself. And with natural remedies, it is just like with medications, some are trial and error. What works for one person may not work for another.

If I can be of further assistance, let me know. Good luck to you and your mother.

Welcome to the Forum, kclay.  There are a few things I'd like to mention about your mom.  First of all, it would be beneficial if your mom became a member here and particpated herself so she can ask whatever questions she has if she is able.  How was she diagnosed?  What tests did the doctor's office use?  Do you know what her blood sugar readings were?  How often does she test her blood sugar?  What did her doctor tell her to do after he diagnosed her diabetes?  He must have given her some instructions.  Meds?  Diet?  Exercise?

Although most people would like to use natural supplements for any disease, sometimes it's not possible and you have to be aware that many people may also have severe reactions to "natural" supplements just as some people might to other medications.  Here on the forum you'll find that most of us try to follow a diet of low or no carbohydrates since they raise blood sugar.  Please check through the past subjects for food and recipes for that information.  We have discussed food, diet and exercise a lot here and you'll find tons of information.  A very informative book on the whole scope of diabetes is The Diabetes Solution by Dr. Richard Bernstein.

Please check back with us with more information so we can be of more help to your mom, and encourage her to sign on here herself.  She'll find several people dealing with the same things she's going through.

Thanks for the input, everyone. My mom is not one to get on the internet much. I'll see what she thinks about the forum idea. :-) I wish I had more time myself for researching. Seems I read about the bitter melon thing somewhere else too. Is that a tea, capsule???
