hi all I was diagnosed as epileptic when I was 15 and put on dilantin. Back then I had a lot of seizures. I am now 49 and have not been on medication for at least 15 years. I have had i think 2 seizures in the past 13 years up until last Friday. I was at work and just blacked out. One of my co-workers said that my hands drew up to my chest and I started a snoring sound and then all of a sudden stopped. Needless to say I got a good lecture from the er doctor that I should be on meds and he put me on Zanegren. It has some really bad side effects. I am going to see a neurologist on Monday hopefully she will be able to find something that agrees with me. I really have never hurt my self before this seizure. I got a good bump on the head and a really good shiner from hitting the copy machine.

Hi there Sunsine and Welcome to HealingWell!

Im sorry to hear that you have started having seizures again. I think it is important to see a neurologist about your medication to find one that suits you better. If Dilantin suited you when you were 15, there is no reason why you shouldnt go back onto it even though it is quite an old fashioned medication by todays standard. I take Carbamazepine / Tegretol which works great for me. There is also Lamotrigine / Lamictal which my mum has taken and that worked really well for her. I think it is also important to try and work out why these seizures have restarted. Do you know what you trigger is?

I have no idea what my trigger is. Sometimes I think stress. All of the seizures I have had are different in one way or another. I do not want to get back on dilantin. I would like to try one of the newer meds with the fewest side effects and most of all weight gain which I have heard some complaints of on some postings. Well I will see tomorrow what the doc thinks. Thanks for the support

I can understand why you would want to try a newer med if you have had dilantin before and had problems. Good luck with the doctor. Let us know how it goes!
