Chemical balances for Epilepsy?

I have a friend with epilepsy that I'm trying to help. Her medications for epilepsy work three weeks out of the month but there must be a chemical imbalance when it comes to the time of the month. For the last four months she's been fine with this exception. Then the seisures happen between 3-5 episodes in a day. we end up at the emergency room. She is vigilant with her medication during the month. Could a enzime or chemical be missing during the period that throws the medication out the window? or is there something else we should be looking at? Directions would be appreciated thank you!
