HI! My daughter Kristi is 4 almost 5. She has autism and just diagonosised with epilepsy on Dec1. Kristi is currently on lamictal and its working wonderfully. She hasn't had a seizure since before Christmas. My dilema is I can't find anything on both together. I find plenty of things on epilepsy and plenty on autism but not together. Her neuro has done studies on it and we know it exists. I have to deal with both and its driving me crazy. She goes to a   specail preschool for her learning disabilities due to her autism.
I just worry about more seizures and what its going to do to her. She has really bad mood swings especailly if she hasn't had a good nights rest her neuro said it wasn't from the lamictal but I'm kinda wondering she wasn't this way before. Any ideas??
Thanks, Bonnie

Bonnie, you sure have your plate full dealing with both disorders!! Epilepsy Foundation says that about 20 % of those with autism will also develope epilepsy at some time. I used to work with a boy with Autism who is just now starting treatment for seizures. He is now almost 13.

I will see if I can find info on both together for you. Hang in there. I know you face so many challenges! SO glad this med is doing well for her!

Welcome!

Here is some information. Often it happens closer to puberty, but I believe it can happen at any age.

Epilepsy Ontario is a doctor run site with reliable information as well. I hope this has been a help!

Hi Bonnie it looks like you have received some real good info so far. I too will do some research for you. I have two children, one is a ten year boy with Biploar and ADHD. We cannot treat his adhd because will agrevate his bipolar, so we just treat the biploar which is doing ok with an antiphychotic. My daughter is 5 and a half she has high functioning autism, we found out at 3, she went through two years of special needs pre k, and now is in a reg kindergarten classroom, with 1 hour of support in a spec ed class for social learning. And she has a speical parapro with her for an hour during the most unstructered point of the day like centers, to help her with socialness. This year we have found she is bipolar as well. Before she was dx with autsim we had to rule out seizures, because she would have seizure like tantrums, which she no longer does now. MRI was fine but EEG was unconclusive, she was not in the state they needed her to be in. But I am guessing from the normal MRI she does not have epilepsy, but as noted above, sometimes these do not occur until puberty. So I will pray she does not. She is on Prozac to help with the anxiety of autism, and on an antiphychotic to counter the mania that the prozac can produce in people with bipolar. When you mentioned mood swings that alerted me to think of bipolar, many of these disorders have many overlapping symptoms with the ADHD, Bipolar, Autism, PDD and so on. She is also has OCD(obcessive compulsive, anxiety. She would have bad mood swings, she would be very depressed and not eat or play, and would sleep all day. And she is not like that she is one of the minority of autistics that actually really like touch alot, she like hard aggressive contact, very affectionate. So this really scared me. Then she would go through periods of mania, where she would think she could do anything. She was abusing our cats, and me and herself, so we had to do something, finally had to try meds. But I will say that with out her intensive speech therapy, and early intervention, and by the Grace of God she would not be where she is today, most cannot tell she is autistic, the language therapy being the best therapy for her, with teaching her pragamatics, very cool!! A year ago she did not know what why and how were used for, now she does, and very well. So I am very grateful and blessed. Anyways sorry for being so long winded, I just saw the topic autism pop up when I signed on, so I had to peek in and see, we all need as much support as we can get. I am usaully in the lupus and fibro forums, as these too also overlap in symptoms, just like many other disorders and diseases. Check out those sites listed in the above listed post here, and let us know what you think and find out, very curiois myself too, I will share any info I can find too. take care....

Bonnie I wanted to add that anti seizure meds are one of the frontline meds to treat bipolar. I am not saying our daughter is bipolar as well, but hey if you see marked improvement on the anti seizure meds thats a good thing, let us know what happens,...
