confused  Hello everyone, I have a quick question about Keppra.  I have been taking Keppra since this past August at 750mg twice a day.  I've lost some weight in the past 2 or 3 months and now I'm beginning to feel sick every morning.  Now my question comes from when I experienced the same thing taking Lamictal though.  I was taking Lamictal last school year and had lost a bit of weight and was basically sick for 2 or 3 months off and on not realizing that I was ODing on the Lamictal.  I would get really dizzy and throw-up, but just water.  I wouldn't be able to concentrate.  I was just wondering if anyone had experienced these types of symptoms when on Keppra and loosing weight.  I'm going to try to gain a little bit of weight but I just wanted to know if what i'm going through with keppra is the same thing as Lamictal.  Has anyone essentially began to OD on Keppra because of weight loss?  Thanks!~Jessica

Hello I am on 1000MG Keppra daily.  Since the start of the med, I gained weight and now have an inability to loose it.  My Neuro said he was going to switch me to Topomax so I could loose some weight.  Keppra is also making my thyroid function borderline hypo.  So to answer your question, Keppra has the opposite effect on me then it does you :-)   Wish I was you...LOL Take care Tracy

You guys are so funny! I would like a hot turkey sandwich too!
I was on keppra about 2 years ago and I didn't lose any weight. But as soon as I got on Topomax, I dropped 15 pounds in 4 months. But I do remember that I had a little nausea with the keppra, but it didn't stop me from eating, I just ate a lot of crackers. It reminded me of when I had morning sickness when I was pregnant!

lamictal 200mg 2x/d
zonegran 150mg 3/d

Thanks for the stories! I was really wondering more if people had experiences when loosing weight not because of Keppra but just because of exercising and such and then after your weight dropped, you became ill from the higher dosage of Keppra. I'm not sure if that makes any sense. I don't think it's Keppra that's making me loose weight though- I've been exercising almost everyday of the week because it makes me feel better and I think I'm not eating as much as I should be. The combination of those two made me loose a bunch of weight. So I was just wondering if anyone had lost weight and found that they needed to decrease Keppra because their dosage was too high for their weight. Thanks much! ~Jessica

Looking for some help or validation that I am not making something of nothing. I am a 25 year old woman and have been diagnosed with epilepsy for 15 years. I have been on Tegretol, Carbitrol, and have currently been on Keppra for 4 years, at 4 750mg tablets per day. I am starting to think that Keppra is decreasing my libido but have not been able to find any proof of this side effect in women. Is it an actual side effect or do I have another problem? I don't think it's normal for a 25 year old to have no interest in sex. Any advice?

hey shorty28420,

I have been on keppra for almost a year. in the begining my neuro put me on 8 500mg tablets a day. I had been so sick for so long, 20 partial seziures a day and 2-3 grand mal a week. So I tried really hard to make the keppra work. especially when all of the seziures stopped. Then I became completely psychotic. I was no loger me. I had these crazy suicidal thoughts. When I was not uncontrolably angry for no reason, I was totaly numb inside. I felt nothing. I looked my husband in the eye one day and said "i don't understand how I could hate someone as much as i hate you." I don't hate him, he is so good to me. I did not want to be touched. I lost all interest in sex.

Deep inside i knew these things were NOT me. so i went to my really great neuro. (even though i was ebaressed) she lowered my dose. things got better right away, no seziures, less side effects. But I still had a few. Low sex drive, moring sickness like nausea, body achs. so she lowered it again. i feel really good now. the scary thing is that i went from taking 4000 mg a day to taking 1000 mg a day. they canont watch your dosage by drawing blood like alot of the other drugs. they have to just estimate "guess"  how much keppra you need based on your weight. i am a big girl so thats why she gave me so much.

So this is what I think.

everyone absobs this med differently and that is why it cannot be monitered.and why so many people have such bad side effects from it. When you have a seziure the dr adjusts your dose. it should be the same with side effects. I have talked to alot of people who say lowered sex drive is a side effect of keppra.  talk to your dr. about slowly lowering your dosage. it can make all the difference. sometimes i take an extra pill, when im fealing a little off or during peak sezure days (PMS=grand mal for me) Pay attention to your body. only you know when something is not normal for you.

Keppra seems to have a remarkable variety of effects on different people. Its impact on me has been... nothing! No side-effects, apart from a few days of drowsiness when I first started taking it. And absolutely no improvement on my seizures either. I keep on taking it just to shut my neuro up, but I might as well be gulping down suger pills. Although suger pills might cause some much-needed weight gain.

I currently take Lamictal and Keppra. I haven't really felt any side effects at all from taking either one of them. Although I don't know if there has been an improvement or not, or if my recent "outburst" of 6 seizures in 3 months was just a fluke because I hadn't had one for over 3 years.

My son takes Keppra - 2000 mg a day and 500 mg of Lamictal as wellas 650 mg of Zonegran. He has lost weight from the Keppra but after about 3 yrs has gained it back from bad habits. The only other side effect he has had from Keppra is that is makes him irritable and he often doesn't remember things I tell him.

I was taking 1000 mg of Keppra a day and I hated the way it made me feel I was angry all the time and felt like some stranger had taken over my body. I gained weight but yet had no appetite. After having an incident at work where I threw something in anger at a co-worker, I talked my Dr. into cutting my dosage in half and feel more like myself.

Hello everyone!
I have been on carbatrol for the past year, but have gained over 15 lbs, which is out of the norm. Other than that I haven't had any side effects from the drug. I felt like I just kept gaining and wasn't able to lose any of the weight.
My dr. just switched me to keppra, which she said was weight neutral. I have felt a slight loss of appetite but I am hoping it will work itself out.
I really just don't know which medication will ever be ok without any side effects.
