is this part of my fibro?

Hi! I'm new to the forum. I was diagnosed with fibro in June, but I have been in severe pain since an auto accident in May 2007. I broke my hand in the accident. After about two months, I began experiencing severe neck pains. I thought I had a ruptured disk but after visiting several orthos and not getting a diagnosis, I was told that I have forward head posture and put on pain killers and given physical therapy. Unfortunately the PT didn't work (I was always too tired to do it at home as a single parent of two kids, though I didn't know why). about four months later I began experiencing a stiffness and inability to straighten my elbow. I told the ortho and he said it was overuse. That was in December and I still cannot straighten it. My GP sent me to another ortho who said x-rays were fine but I had fluid in my elbow and I needed to see a rheumy. That's when I got diagnosed, but the rheumy says I need to see an ortho for my elbow. This seems like a never ending circle of wasted co-pays and no answers. I can't tell you how relieved I was to actually get the dx of fibro! At least I knew what was causing all of my other symptoms. I need to know if my neck and arm pains and even the fluid on my elbow are part of my fibro or just another thing that's wrong with me. Doe anyone out there have a similar story?

It is so hard to say. You have fluid on your elbow? That could be causing that problem. Fibro is so tricky, but generally effects the muscles instead of the joints. So this might go away. Which would be a good thing.

What did he mean by forward head posture? Is that the way that you hold your head. I know that fibro causes the neck and shoulder muscles to get really tight, I often find my shoulders up to my ears from holding them different to relieve the pain from the tightness. I think that I tense up due to the pain and that is how I get that way.

Keep posting, this is an interesting thread, I am sure that you will get more and better replies.

Best wishes to you,
Karen...

The elbow thing didn't start until after I began to have other symptoms like pain throughout my body and tiredness. Forward head posture is basically when my head is in front of my shoulders. The PT said I needed to do exercises daily to improve my posture and that the accident probably messed up the alignment worse. Before my accident, I had not been on medication for anything other than headaches. The pain began after having a sinus infection. I thought my glands were swollen because I was so sick. Once the infection was better, I noticed my neck felt just as bad and began to worsen. The pain I experienced with this for months was disabling. I couldn't sleep at night because I would wake in pain so often. It literally felt like my neck couldn't hold my head up. Drs kept giving me pain killers until I had to take so many to get the effects. I began to be dependent on them and neglect my children. One day I woke up with a terrible migraine so bad that I had to go to the ER where they tried to prescribe me more painkillers. At this point, I lost it. The last time I had been to the hospital was with my neck and they gave me MS CONTIN! It seemed like the only treatment was to cover up my symptoms which just made me out of it for about six months. I decided to stop taking all pain killers and got on prozac because my Dr said I had Post traumatic stress syndrome from the accident. This helped my state of mind but didn't provide relief of anything else. The interesting thing to me is that so far, my neck problem and my elbow thing have both been on the right side of my body. I still have no idea what is going on and would appreciate any feedback.

I know exactly how you feel. I never had an accident but I have pain in my neck, shoulder, arms and sometimes my underarms.. I got no answers other than fibro too. I have lack of sleep unless I take something for it and I hate depending on that everynight. People think I'm nuts. They don't understand the chronic pain I'm in every day. They say its anxiety but how can anxxiety give pain and siffness like this. It almost takes over your life.

Hi Tas75 and welcome to our family.

Cindy I know what you mean about the neck. My neck has always been a problem but I had a little car accident last Nov and it's been a big problem since. I have had CAT scan done and all it showed was some arthritis. I feel like I need a neck brace to hold my head up sometimes. I'm starting water PT Mon and they are going to try and strengthen my muscles but I don't have a lot of faith in it. Actually, the more that is done to my neck the worse it gets. I get these shooting pains that go up in my head on the left side when the muscle is touched wrong. I think there is some nerve entrapment there.

I don't know about your elbow that could be something different than fibro. We can't always blame fibro for everything. But I hope you get some answers soon.

luv and hugs

Cindy30,

I have neck, shoulder and arm problems and the majority of it is on the right side.  I had a very heavy ceiling fan fall and hit me on the head, the blade cut my right eyebrow.  It wasn't long after that I started having symtoms.  It took a long time and many doctors before we figured out what was wrong.  The pain has gotten much better with medication.  My doctor has me taking prozac and pamelor.  He is telling me that the prozac helps the headaches and the pamelor is for sleep (getting enough and quality sleep eases the pain).  I was really resistant to taking medication (especially anti-depressants) at first but now would not be without them.  I am so much better.  I still have pain everyday, the worst in my neck and shoulder, but It's managable.

I think you need to continue investigating your elbow.  The fluid makes me think there is something they can do to relieve some of the pressure or at least give you some flexibility.  I know that I will be requesting an MRI on my shoulder when I see my doctor next month.  I really think that there is something wrong with it and will feel much better having it scanned.

Welcome and hang in there!

Meggie
