about a month ago I had strained my neck because I had been stretching too much..I was fine until I woke up the next morning and couldn't turn my head without sharp pulling pain. A few days later I had been feeling better..and a couple days after that even better. But I have yet to return to my normal, somewhat limited, range of motion. Every morning I wake up very stiff and in a lot of pain. After an hour or so I do loosen up a bit and feel better, but buy the end of the day my neck and into my shoulder starts killing me once again. I do take a flexeril at night when im in pain and the kids are in bed but dont want to be sleepy all day. No over the counter pain meds help and all, and I really dont think the muscle relaxer helps other than to help me get to sleep. I have just been awaiting my physical therapy to start on monday..hoping that it will eventually help me get to some relief.

This morning I wake up with my neck being in a lot more pain. But now its the other side that is really killing me. So now I feel like there is no direction I can turn my head in, and not be in a lot of pain. I dont even want to hold my head up but I have kids to take care of so i have to just deal with this.

My ? is...does anyone else strain there neck sleeping? or find it really easy to pull their muscles and then suffer for weeks on end? confused
Yours Truly,

Erin Ann

Erin Ann, maybe a light massage would help.  Also, make a rice bag.  Take a tube sock and fill it maybe 2/3's full of regular rice (not instant) and tie a knot at the top of the sock.  You heat this in the microwave and it will give off moist heat.  You can drape it on your neck when you are sitting and it will feel good.

On the Fibro 101 thread, the second thread from the top of the first page, there is a link to Great Stretching Exercises.  These are gentle and may help you too.  There are some for neck and shoulder.  Hope this helps.

I get lots of neck and upper back pain. My muscles are so tight right now, I can't have them touched. I have had stiff necks and knots in my back for most of my life. I always try to stretch throughout the day. My doctor just told me to hold the stretch for at least 30 seconds, and repeat for 3 reps, 3 times a day. This is head forward, back, to each side, and a corkscrew for the back, sitting on a chair. I know it's hard to find the time with kids, and so easy to forget to do too! Hopefully physio will help you too. Like Sherrine said, heat is great for tense muscles.

in the land of Limbo, taking OTC meds only.
Don't know what's wrong, can't fix it, doctors are so sloooow!!!

I use the rice bags, they really help a lot. I have tense neck muscles also. that is where I carry all of the stress. Before I know it, my shoulders are up by my ears. Good posture will help that part.

Gentle stretching is also the key. Dont' stretch until it hurts. That is too much on our rigid muscles. Just gentle.

I hope that you feel better soon

Erin Ann, my neck has been a major problem since I had a little wreck last Nov. It seems the more they do to try to fix it the more it is aggravated. I make my own pillows for my bed using zip up pillow covers and fiber fill and I make them fluffy so I can tuck part of it under my neck at night for support. I don't like the pillows that are made to support your neck.

I'm starting water therapy Mon. and one of things she is going to work on is my neck. They think if they can strengthen the muscles in my neck it will help. I'm not sold on this idea but will give it a chance.

I did have CAT scan and the only thing it showed was some osteoarthritis.

I feel like I need a neck brace sometimes to hold my head up. Use the heat and try to lay down with your neck supported for awhile.

luv and hugs
