Hi everyone,
It's me again. I have been trying to learn about what meds they use to treat fibromyalgia. So far what little I have learned and I do mean little is that the meds they use you gain weight with. I have a big problem with that. I suffer from major depression and have for long time. The meds I take cause you to gain weight and I did. I did everything I could to take the weight off and I do mean EVERYTHING. I am finally back down at an ideal weight for me. The last thing I want is to put it back on. Could you please tell me what meds you take for fibro and if you gained weight from it so I will know what to talk to the Rhuemy about? It sure would be a big help. Thanks for your time!

Hi Poco,

I think that it all depends what the rheumy is like. Some prescribe lyrica, and I have heard about weight gain from some, but not from all.

Some treat the pain with pain medications. I haven't heard anybody gaining weight from them yet.

Do you suffer from fatigue? I take adderall for that and it works well. It is an amphetamine and that doesn't cause you to gain weight, though I am not losing very fast. But have lost some.

I am sure that somebody will come along with more information for you. There is also cymbalta, but i haven't heard too much about that yet. I think they are just starting to use it. It seems to me someone did mention it on a thread but I think that they just started it.

Good luck at the rheumies.
hugs, Karen...

poco,

Like Karen (getting by) said, there are different things that work for different people.  Yes, Lyrica is the FDA approved med used for fibro, but I know that a lot of people here take a number of different things.  Some people can manage on OTC meds (God Bless You-I SO wish I were you), some take Lyrica or Cymbalta, and some need stronger meds like narcotics.  I take Vicodin 7.5/750, Neurontin, Zoloft, and Klonopin-and there are days when that is enough, and there are days where that doesn't even touch me.  I also know that some people need Oxycontin, morphine, demerol, or use fentanyl patches.

The main thing that you should do is find what works for YOU.  Of course, then you have to get your docs to figure out what you need and try to convice him or her that you aren't drug seeking. eyes   But, that's another thread that I could write a book on.  At least I've only written a short pamphlet on this one. tongue

Anyway, it took me a long time to find the right combo of meds-and I am still having pain control issues.  I hope you find answers and relief, soon! :-)

FINALLY dxd on 06/13/08
Vicodin, Neurontin, Ibuprofen for pain-which doesn't help, BTW
Zoloft & methadone (NOT for pain) for sanity-which doesn't help, BTW
Klonopin for anxiety (Guess what?  Doesn't help!)

I am taking a combo of ultram [100 mg twice a day], and cymbalta [60 mg a day] for pain. When the pain is bad [???] my doc lets me take flexeril- as much as I need until the flare calms down [again- ???] LOL he says that flexeril is not really useful as a daily pain med. I know that I am in more pain now that I am not taking it daily. Convincing him may be tough. I have not had a doc yet [I have moved five times in 8 years] that will prescribe anything serious for pain, they keep telling me I don't need another issuen [translation- addiction to narcotics]. They do not understand that I am not drug seeking, but I can be trusted to take my meds reponsibly and not self-medicate for fun.I keep promising myself that I will start on malic acis w/magnesium, but I haven't ordered it yet. I am going to do that today! Hope you find the info you need to help your rheumy help you best.
Peace!
