Well, I saw the new primary today, and starting tomorrow...I will be looking for another new primary.

I have a great Rhumy that treats me with respect, so I am not looking for a primary to treat my fibro for me. I just need a regular dr to go to when I am ill and for my regular meds (for asthma & GERD).

During the intake with this new dr,he asked me what I was seeing a rhumy for, I told him fibromyalgia and he told me I did not have fibromyalgia but I had tension myositis syndrome. I questioned what this was & he said it was a psychosomatic illness that causes pain. He said that the pain I felt was all in my head & that no medication would ever work for me & that only I could "heal" myself.

Oh, and he also told me that I was morbidly obese (I am about 40lbs overweight-that I gained when I quit smoking a year ago) and that if I exercised more, not only would I be out of pain I would lose some weight too.

Can you say Q-U-A-C-K? Needless to say I will not be going back to his office.

Oh well, I will try again.

Please, please, please, go to the Fibro 101 thread...it's the second thread on the forum.  There is a link to doctor's response to a New York Times article.  These learned doctors explain all about fibro to the Neanderthal doctors out there.  You should print that out and send it to  your Neanderthal doctor.  I think he needs some "book learnin'"!  wink

My doc says its the nervous system sending false signals of pain throughout my body and that although there is no reason for the pain it still is real.  He has no idea of the severity.  I have been to docs that deny its existance also and left in tears.  As for the wieght issure how insensitive.  My pills have put weight on me they are known for it but my stepmother told me I was getting fat despite the fact she knows I cant help it , its the pills plus cant excxersise much.  I no longer see her.  She also once told me she thought I was exagerating the illness.  I hope you find a good doc :-) :-) :-) sue2z

Ugghh!  I'm sorry you had to go through that!  I didn't have a difficult time getting diagnosed with fibromyalgia (I already knew I had it, so I started with a rheumy), but I did have trouble finding a correct diagnosis for my inner ear disorder.

I saw a couple of neurologists who told me it was just anxiety - well duh, anyone would be anxious if the room is spinning constantly.  I found a good ENT at a research hospital, and I am getting proper treatment.  But, going through all of the ding-dong doctors to get a proper diagnosis really took its toll on me emotionally.

Many doctors are too quick to dismiss all pain, dizziness, etc. complaints as anxiety or depression (especially in women).  What they fail to realize is that many of us have anxiety BECAUSE we have other illnesses.

As for the weight thing, many fibromites are overweight because exercise can be very painful, not to mention the exhaustion and medications involved.

Just out of curiosity, I wonder what would make your primary think he knows more about fibro than a rheumy?

Sorry for the rant, but I've been around this track one too many times myself, and It makes me furious!  smhair

Finding a doctor is kinda like finding a husband, we find a lot of jerks before we find the right one. I would take Sherrine's advice and send him the info. devil

Are we obligated by law to pay these people if we go once and do not get the service we thought we were getting??? I thought about that when I went to the pain doc and didn't like his attitude about fibro.

Keep looking there are great docs out there.

luv and hugs

Marlee, your post just reminded me of this.  I was heading to the beach last week and passed a church.  They had a sign that said they were having a seminar there.  The title of the seminar was, "How Not to Marry a Jerk"!  tongue    I couldn't believe it!

Austen, from the brief description of your hearing problem in your post, I guessed you probably had Meniere's Disease!  I'm not a doctor!  You didn't mention what it was in your post but it was listed in your signature.  So, why did these stupid doctors not even consider that.  They should have tested you for that right out the door!  UGH!

It takes a while, but the hunt for a good doctor is well worth it!

Sherrine,

Don't want to hijack this post, but I'm just wondering what type of inner ear disorder you deal with? I didn't mention that I'd also been to another ENT who didn't even entertain the thought of Meniere's.

I think that sometimes those of us who live with these illnesses know more about them than the doctors do.  Now if we could only pull down those six figure salaries for all of this knowledge gained by experience!  smilewinkgrin

Mominmich2,
Your primary probably didn't tell you that tension myositis syndrome is still in the THEORY STAGE and that Dr. John E. Sarno, the originator of this theory is considered to be on the fringe as far as back pain goes... Found this:
"His critics in mainstream medicine argue that neither the theory of TMS nor the effectiveness of the treatment has been proven in a properly controlled clinical trial." I'm all about that double blind kind of scientific trial stuff, but since Sarno says that the pain is all in our heads from the stress of our lives... How do you do a clinical trial on that? So he can't really be proven wrong or right... Whew!!! I can only hope that he is blessed with this @#$%^ disorder himself, or perhaps he should discover fibro in his wife, mom or daughter. THAT would prove enlightening!

You may want to send your primary, (the one you are dumping) some links to Dr. Daniel Clauw from U. of M. Might help him get back on track with the real world of medicine vs. the virtual reality of Dr. Sarno.
