I tripped and fell flat on my face the other night.  At first, (after I figured out I was ok) it was actually kinda funny, a little comic relief.  THEN....starting Saturday, I started developing this horrific pain on my right side.  It got worse and worse, until Monday I gave up and went to see my dr. Come to find out I guess I bruised my ribs when I fell, and then somehow, over the weekend, I managed to break 2 of them.  Talk about excrutiating pain!!!  I have gone thru childbirth, gall bladder surgery and rotator cuff surgery, and these 2 broken ribs take the gold medal.  I am just wondering how long the unbearable, stabbing, burning, uncontrollable pain is going to last.  My doc said it would bet worse before it got better, (I am not sure how it is going to get any worse?!?) but does anyone know a time line? confused

I have heard that broken ribs can be the worst. :(

I have had my ribs bruised at the end of my pregnancy with my oldest son. He was almost ten pounds when he was born and he would kick so hard, it bruised my ribs on one side. NOT fun!!

Try to take it easy as much as possible and "time" is going to be the healer. Did they give you something to take for this added pain? GamJill

I'm sorry momofmany. My DH broke many of my ribs a few years ago while trying to make my back feel better. Yeah, even our doc had a laugh over that one although I didn't see the humor in it at the time. He has since rebroke one on two different occasions making love. My doc rxd lidoderm patches to put on my ribs. They are about 3x6 inch patches with lidocaine in them and you put them on for 12 hrs and off for 12 hrs. Since the ribs are so close to the skin they do help to numb the area. It's going to take a few weeks for them to heal.
I would have to sit up in bed before I could turn over cause you can't roll over when you have broken ribs as I'm sure you have found.
Driving was horrible with the seat belt and having to turn to look when backing up.
Just take it easy for awhile til they heal. We don't realize how many movements affect an area on our bodies til there is a problem in that area.
Fortunately, we had just moved into a rental house while our house was being built so I didn't have much to do at the time. You better believe he was my servant for awhile. turn
luv and hugs

I'm sorry you hurt yourself.  Use lots of heat.  I had rib pain when pregnant and my only relief came from heat.

sorry to hear about your ribs.  I broke two ribs when I fell on the ice this
past February. It was a week before I went to the drs.  The pain was
HORRIFIC.  I couldnt sit up, lie down, stand or walk for days.  I never slept.
I finally used moist heat and laid on the side my ribs were broken.  I was
mostly on the couch for 6 weeks. It does take time to heal, and then
I got a terrible flare from the fall. So I hurt all over, but I know what you are going thru with the ribs.  Also, try taking a warm bath with epsom salts,as this does help a lot.  Hope you feel better soon, taking it easy is the best advice.  Make sure you take deep breaths as much as possible to prevent
pneumonia.  Feel BETTER SOON!!!!

I am so sorry. I cannot even imagine having this pain on top of fibro.

How are you doing now?

Did they give you a brace to wear? I bruised my ribs coughing once when I was too stubborn to go to the doc for pneumonia! I cannot imagine cracked ribs. Hope you feel better soon.
