I am on the 2nd week of reduction and am suffering pretty bad. I have been on narcs for over 10 years and as much as I have tried to go off them I haven't had a lot of support. I have been taking 240 mg of oxycontin and the same of IR the dose has been the same for 8 years so it hasn't worked for a long time and the side effects are not worth it anymore. Did you find an easier way? I am into the 3rd week and I have cut the dose in 1/2 but the restless legs and lack of sleep is the worst..

Since you're posting in a fibro thread, pain from that was/is being controlled by Oxycontin. My understanding is that Oxycontin should only be used for a short interval as it is a narcotic/habit forming drug.

I too have fibro, but my pain is currently under control with 600 mg. of Neuontin three times a day. I started with 300mg 3x a day, but had no relief until I reached 600mg.

I've read your post a couple of times, but I'm not sure I'm answering the question. Are you asking how to wean yourself off the Oxycontin? I haven't got an answer for that except to say that I took it only when my pain was really bad. Honestly, I was afraid of becoming addicted.

Consult your pharmasist for the safest dosage reduction method.

I take it that your doctor is helping you? Is he going to give you something else in replace of it? When my husband went off of it, he switched to methadone for a while. It really helps with the horrible symptoms of withdrawal.

I wish you luck, I know that it isn't easy. Please tell me that your doctor is helping you.

Hugs, Karen

Hi, Lais, and welcome!  I don't know a thing about narcotic medication.  There are some members on here that take them but you will find more members, and probably more help for your question, on the Chronic Pain forum.  In the light blue bar you will see "Forum Quick Jump".  Scroll until  you see Chronic Pain and click on it and it will take you to HealingWell's chronic pain forum.  There are some great people over that that will probably be able to help you.  But, keep checking this thread.  Someone in this forum may have the answer you are looking for.

I wish you the best of luck at getting off that medication.  Please let us know how you are doing.  We really do care.

Thanks for all the support!
I really don't want to go on methadone because of the high dose i am on of Oxy I would have to go on a dangerous dose. the Dr has no experience of how to get patients off the dose I am on. I think he's abit afraid of back lash if People ask how I ever got to this point. He did give my amnytriptolyn 100 mg x 2 @ bed time and quinine for leg cramps at night.
I did put this on the chronic pain site as well but so far no response.
I guess I should explain how this all started... I have had fibro and Migrains for years and took the odd tylenol 3 but controlled the pain mostly with exersize and a type A personality...In 1999 or so I had a bad lift at work, I was an RN. I had a hiadus hurnia and I guess it went through the valves in my asophagus causing me to asperate stomach acid into my lungs, even my sinuses! I was not diagnosed untill 2001 when I had been on antibiotics for all most a whole year for lung infections. I just got sicker and sicker of course the fibro went out of control. by 2001 I was in bed 20 hrs a day. Finally a resp. specialist scoped my lungs and found the problem. I live in Canada and allthough we have cheap medical we now often get what we pay for...It took a year to get all the tests a surgeon wanted before deciding to do surgury. I had pain in my chest like a heart attack and ended up in emerge a few times when the acid almost burned through my asophagus. 2002 I was put on an urgent list for surgury to have a lap proceedure. Our waiting periods are horrible and it took 2 1/2 years to get the surgury. By then I had gained 80 lbs been on antibiotics almost the entire time, and my thyroid was almost non existent except they would not treat me for hypo thyroid as my TSH the normal test didn't show it. After my surgury the chest pain stopped but my lungs were damaged and I was still always on antibiotics. i had no energy and the pain was unending. By 2006 My marriage fell apart and my ex turned to alchahol and drugs and decided to party with my 15 and 17 year old daughters. god gave me the strength to leave, and a walk in Dr put me on synthroid it helped my energy greatly! I lost 45 lbs in the first year. Saddly my daughters chose to stay with their Dad who let them have full freedom and control of their home. I bought a house in 2007 and Praise god my youngest moved into my home after deciding freedom, drugs and the life she was living was not working and she wanted a Mom. By this time I was doing better but I could not get off these drugs! I can't get any support unless I pay 20- 80,000.00 and I am on disability. Well I could rob a bank and maybe the Courts would sentance me with treatment....So i am doing this the hard way. I am getting advice from my Dr and pharmacy but so far its been tough. My Daughters are worried about their Dad and his addictions he has know and having an addicted Mom is really hard on them. I need to be an example and give them Hope. God is with me and I know through him I will do this but I need help from people who understand with out all the judgement as no one judges me harder than ME!
May God Bless all of you

Do you think that your doctor could taper you down and then put you on oxycodone for a while? That is like the oxycontin, only quicker release and less milligrams.

I hope that your decreasing goes well. I know that it is hard because I watched my husband cut himself back. It wasn't easy at all for him. He just wanted off of it. Here it can be a dangerous drug because of abuse and he had people following him out of the pharmacy and it made him nervous.

Good luck with this. Keep posting for we are here to help you the best that we can.

Hugs karen
