For the past close to 8 weeks, I have been having severe diareah. By now I feel an entrenched dehydration that I can not get under control. My joints ache. I know that I am not getting anywhere the amount of nutrition I need, regardless of what I try and eat. I don't know what kicked it off, I have never dealt with this at this level before. I have tried everything I can think of- light food, no meat, no veggies, pepto, anti-acids; no dairy/ dairy, no alcohol, herbs/no herbs. This has gotten to the point that it is in control of where I go, what I can do, how long I can be out. In addition, the abdominal cramping is making me very grumpy and I'm exhausted from mot being able to sleep through the night. I will go to the doc soon, but I am afraid to do that because out will come the orders for hideous tests that I would like to avoid if I can try something nutritional or pharmaceutical at first. Help please, I am at my wits end.
Thank you!

Sera,
This could be one of a million things and all of them dangerous. I hate to say it but you really need to get to the doc on this one. In the meantime, gatorade may help with the low electrolyte problems. BTW, you may just need a blood test or to turn in a stool sample... not go the whole scope thing. Sending some prayers.

The scope's not bad at all if it comes down to it. The worst part is the prep and since you already have D, it won't be as bad. Eight weeks is far too long and as Jeannie said, many of these things can be dangerous. If something OTC was going to work, you'd probably be better by now.

Is there anything else I can try that I am not aware of? I am still researching, but does anyone have any thoughts on what this could be?

Sure, it could be C. Diff or giardia, or some other infection or parasite. It could be IBS or an IBD like Crohn's or ulcerative colitis. It could be celiac. It could be salmanella or another food borne illness that your body can't beat. There are a lot of things it could be.

It sounds like you've tried just about everything that you can safely try. You really shouldn't try immodium or anything like it because it can be dangerous if you have an infection or certain medical conditions.

Do you have a fever or even a low grade fever? Is there blood in you stool? If you do, you really need to see a doc ASAP.

I hope you feel better soon.

Have you tried probiotics? I don't think yogurt would be a good idea but maybe some pills.

Possibly listeria, the outbreak caused by a specific brand of meat products. Some people died, others just got really sick. A stool sample sounds in order. Once they're ruled that out a scope is a good idea. That will ease your mind about anything more dangerous. Finally, as a teen and into my twenties, I had that symptom for years. It was IBS. My Doctor prescribed Lomotil for "flares." Good luck, get a stool sample to a lab.

Sera, go to the doc and eat the brat diet: bananas, rice, applesauce and toast (dry). Get some electrolytes into your body to help keep you hydrated.
Hope you feel better,
Sue

Sera I agree it's time to go to the doc. I have diarrhea after I eat from IBS but it's not all day everyday. It cramps my lifestyle as far as going out to eat cause I never know what is going to happen after I eat. My doc did rx donnatol or something like that for the cramping.

If your doc feels you need a scope it really isn't that bad. The prep is the worse part but since your already having diarrhea it shouldn't be a big deal. They put you in lala land during the scope.

luv and hugs

Hi

I had a similar problem about 15 years ago.  It started with severe diarrhea, cramping, and it lasted 2 months.  I was in the ER 3 times with it, and no one could come up with an answer.  I lost 15 lbs, and could not even keep water, jello, or anything in me.  I had bloody stools and it scared me to death. I finally saw a specialist and he said it was anxiety and stress. HOWEVER, you really need to find the cause of this, as it can lead to low potassium levels, heart palpitations, etc.

I had very low potassium levels and they gave me an IV for it.  It took  several months to gain back the weight, and I swore I would never let anxiety get to me like that again.

Please see you dr ASAP, and dont take OTC meds in case you do have an infection.  Are you under a lot of stress or suffer from anxiety??

Hi everyone, and I appreciate all the ideas and benefit of your experiences. Once again you all have come to my rescue! I do have an appt with the doc tomorrow, I can't see my doc, but one of his partners, and I think thats ok, I didn't really like him anyway. I don't think I am under any abnormal stress or anxiety, I kinda thought things were going better in my life. I did have a horrible flare in mid july that sent me to the ER and I knew somethings that were new would smack me around after getting so sick. But I am confused by this. I joined a rec ctr and do water fitness, low impact classes, really tried to deal with nutrition and chunk bad stuff. I don't understand this. I can feel myself slipping away again, I doubt any nutritive value has stayed with me over the past 8 weeks. Nothing tastes right and the thought of eating is so ick, and i've gotten my meds out of whack again. I'm blabbering all over the place, sorry. I haven't felt this bereft since getting so sick in july, almost 3 months ago. For the first time in 6 years of this, I am doubting whether I can do this anymore. I can't manage a daily existence much less get and keep a good job. Thanks again for the help and prayers.

I was like that for 8 weeks recently....the GERD vomiting was also horible. I saw a gastroenterologist, and he prescribed Symax Duotab. It stopped the intestinal cramping and loose bowels. He also gave me Nexium for my stomach, and both have helped. 24 lbs lighter....it finally stopped.
