I am curious, as I read through the threads, about how many people have hypothyroid, a history of long term antibiotic use, have had Mono (Epstein Barr Virus), or other immune system, or auto-immune system disorders. It seems to be a recurring theme through-out the Fibro forum. I know subjectively, my Fibro feels like my body is waging war on me. I have personally had all of the above listed correlates. Anybody else?

Hi Tyno,

Fibromyalgia occurs with autoimmune disorders a lot.  I wish we had more information about why that is.  Frustrating!!

ohh my where to start... had a lot of strepthroat and tonsilitis when i was a child.. so antibiotics where common... penicillin.. even ended up severely allergic to it... had mono in college after an extensive bought with ear and lung infections.. and was diagnosed 2 years later...

was never told that mono was a direct cause of fibro though....

I had both mono-causing viruses (the Epstein-Barr Virus and Cytomegalovirus) 3 years ago. I have had major problems with pain and fatigue ever since. I have just recently been diagnosed with Fibro...

I do not have any autoimmune disorders. I only have fibro and cfids which have yet to be classified as such. In addition, I have never been diagnosed with Epstein Barr or mono. I have been tested for both.

i've never had mono, but i did come down with bell's palsy about a year before i started having fibro symptoms. i also have plaques on my brain that the neurologist told me are most likely due to some sort of infection my body had to fight off at some point, and i've always thought it was all connected somehow.

also, when i was pregnant with my 3rd child, i went through a nasty bout of multiple tooth infections and so did several courses of antibiotics during the pregnancy. my symptoms have also gotten much worse since i gave birth to him. again-connected? if so-how?

it all feels like a big puzzle to me sometimes.. confused

maybe i have the horse before the cary. What if the Fibro brought on some common symptoms/disorders in us folk?
What if we genetically predisposed to the ailments in the survey, therefore it manifested when we weakened by the various correlates. Interesting? Thank-you for participating. I want to know what csuses these freaky ailments.

Hi Tyno,

My Fibromyalgia came after my Lupus diagnosis. It rarely happens the other way when Lupus is involved.  One of the theories to why it shows up after is that the body has been traumatized from the severe symptoms and drug therapy involved with lupus.  That trauma sets up the brain to cause the HPA Axis (Hypothalmus, Pituitary Gland, Adrenal Glands) to mis-communicate with each other, causing Fibro and everything associated with Fibro.

I've been reading an amazing book called "Fibromyalgia & Chronic Myofascial Pain - A Survival Manual, Second Edition" by Devin Starlanyl, and Mary Ellen Copeland.  They're both doctors.  Research is leaning towards Fibromyalgia being very much a brain/gland disorder brought on by physical, mental, emotional traumas. Severe illness, abuse, Post traumatic stress, etc.  It's a fantastic book with a ton of information.

I sure hope that very soon we'll have many more answers to our questions,

Ginny

Thanks Ginny:I have felt strongly, and for soome time that there is a link to the endocrine system. It seems to me I was under hprrific stress as my son was being targetted bt a gang, I started having unnbelievable menstral cycles, and I observed my thyroid go from hyperthyroid, very  active, unable to sleep to it bunning up, leaving me with a goiter, and a lumpy, bumpy thyroid, which barely functions. I sensed I was under attack, but from my own body. I guess that I have a notion of what I.m dealing with, I'll have a means to fight back. Thank-you again.
