I just wondered if anyone has had either lap band or gastric bypass surgery. If so do you feel that the weight loss has helped your fibromyalgia?

I have not... but I've been starting to think about it. I'm not terribly heavy (as compared to a lot of people that I know in my daily life) but I am heavy enough that with the family history and such that I worry about the possibility of diabetes. My other hope is that if I were to lose a little more weight that it would help maybe with the fatigue. Maybe if there's less of me to move around - I'd move it more often. :D

I had a hysterectomy in 2000. When i was going into the surgical suite I emphasized that I had Fibromyalgia. When I was coming out after the surgery, I was screaming in pain and this somewhat older nurse was standing over me yelling "├┐ou have to relax your muscles, you are creating your own pain by tensing up".I tried to explain to her I had no control over the muscles, they were reacting to the stressors my body had been put through. They should have given me a shot of valium along with whatever pain meds they were hitting me up with, that only made me nauseous.See if you can find a surgeon who understands Fibro.

That is what I am thinking Piercings, if I can loose weight then all the additional weight my body is holding may give me some relief. Plus I'm just so unfortable being so over weight.

Tyno3- That is good information to know ahead of time. Sorry that you had to go thru such a bad experience with your surgical team not knowing about the proper care for fibro patients.

Monica I don't know about having it done with fibro but one of my DILs had gastric bypass a year and a half ago and has lost 163 lbs and is like a new person. She did not qualify for the lap band. She had to go through a program before her ins would pay for it. I guess to prove she couldn't lose it on her own. I would go for the lap band if you can it is much safer and less invasive.

By all means make sure the surgical team knows about fibro. Tyno did you have the strength to raise an arm to smack her???

I have not had to have surgery since getting fibro.

luv and hugs

I am only about 10lbs over weight but have known people who have had both with alot of success. As I said Im not that over weight but sure do hurt all over so weight may not have alot to do with the pain I dont want you to get your hopes up.I do believe though that you may end up healthier I also worry about diabetes have had some issues with blood work and it runs in the family both sides. Good luck in whatever you chose to do.
