confused  I have a really strange new thing going on.  Since last Wednesday, my tounge has developed strange, almost raw feeling spots on it.  For lack of a better description, it feels like it has been shaved and has razor burn.  As wierd as it sounds, I was wondering if anyone else has heard of this.  The only thing different is that I have been taking Chantix to stop smoking (3rd week and so far successful!!) If anyone has any ideas I would be eternally grateful as this is really impairing my abitily to eat!!!! shocked

It comes and goes. Momofmany, I think this is a question for your doctor.

This has happened to me.  My remedy is strange but it has helped others.  I put straight rum in my mouth and swish it around and then spit it out.  It will burn at first but the it numbs it.  It kills the bacteria and is usually gone within a day or two.  I will do this like twice a day.

When my children were little and would get canker sores, I would dip a Q-Tip in rum and put it on the canker sore and it would go away.  The kids knew it would sting for a minute but they still would come and ask me to do that to get rid of the sore.  See if that helps you.

Congrats on your quitting smoking!  Great job!

I have tongue/mouth soreness all the time.  My tongue felt raw for the entire month of October.  When I looked at it, all I saw was it looked kind of rippled along the edges.  Sometimes the roof of my mouth feels sore and behind my back teeth.  I have seen a dentist and had blood work for vitamin deficiencies...Nothing.  Myself?  I think I might be allergic to whatever it is they put in bridges and caps, because that is what most of my teeth are.  Maybe it is the Chantix...did you look up the side effects?

Thanks....I have never heard of the rum, and I don't think it is a side effect of the Chantix, but I will check it out. I kinda figured it wasn't that because I have been taking it for about 3 weeks, and haven't had this problem yet.

Sherrine!
RUM??
Wow!
My Marriage & Family
Instructor suggested
Rum & Coke as an
aphrodesiac. I never
tried it so I can't vouch.
Rum for burning tongue
does make sense.
Of course, most of us
would have to spit it out
or it would mix with our
medications and we might
explode.
I don't have a burning tongue
at the moment, but I will
NEVER forget. NEVER.
I think a very gentle scraping
of tongue is a good idea too.

I have Crohn's disease and would get the sores in my mouth so I tried it because of the alcohol in it.  Plus I like the flavor of rum!  LOL  It really does seem to work.  We had a member several months ago having this problem and she tried the rum and it worked for her.  It's quick and cheap!  LOL

I have tongue pain off and on..it more of a very sore feeling (ache) - not cuts. It would last for about 3-4 days then stop. I just tested positive for ANA..so following up with rhuemy tomorrow. I think it may be an auto immune thing.. unless other people with firbro have this too.. I'm not sure.

Is your mouth dry and do you breathe through your mouth at night??? My tongue gets cracks in it at night from being so dry. I have a place on it now that is sore. When it gets really bad I can see the cracks.

i get this painful tongue feeling a lot, too-to me it feels like a coffee burn kind of feeling, and also sometimes it feels like a "coated" tongue feeling..does anyone know what causes this, or is just another one of those mystery symptoms?

i will definitely be trying the rum trick, though! i am up for almost anything that might help:)

for me i get the feeling like its burnt even though its not.. or i ate too much sore candy...but it usually goes away.. i would use listerine or salt water to rinse my mouth.. it goes away... since i can't use rum.. since it interacts with meds... but it does the same thing

I get this all the time. My Doctor recommended I eat pears - yes! Pears. From the can in heavy syrup. I put one in my mouth and hold it against the area that has the pain or lesion. It really helps. My guess is it is some kind of acidic imbalance.
Good Luck!

When i quit smoking I had a few problems with my tongue getting sore.  Part of your problem may be that your tongue is becoming "unnumb"-for lack of a better word.  The tongue becomes coated & numb from years of nicotine & other chemicals.  That's why food really starts tasting better after a few days  or so.  I had smoked for 31 years & really noticed a difference in my tongue.  I don't think this is the main problem you are having but it may contribute to it.  Congrats on your success with quitting.  It is one of the hardest things I ever did.  Good for you.   Nice to meet you, hugs, Denise

I have:  Fibromyalgia, CFS, Hot-Oram Syndrome, nasal allergies, depression

Married to a wonderful supportive husband & between us we have 4 children & 7 grandchildren.

I have been using Chantix for 4 weeks and have this "burnt tongue" sensation.... I am convinced it's a side effect of using the Chantix.... I have not smoked in 3 weeks, but this burnt tongue thing has got to go.... I am relieved somebody else has had this side effect while taking the Chantix and it's not something more serious.
