Help: Is it the Fibro, yeast overgrowth, or my meds (listed in signature). All I eat is yoghourt, drink milk and chocolate, sometimes with nuts. Sometimes I'll have 2 slices of raisin toast. I crave the chocolate and milk like a junkie. I have heard amyltriptilene can cause cravings. does anyone know if Trazadone does also? I gotta fix this or I'll be weighing in at 200 lbs. My joints sure don't need that. I have been under tremendous stress. There's nothing in my life to look forward to. I care for my Dad with Alzheimers and we all know, there's no happy ending there. Also, we struggle financially, and he can be verbally abusive, at times. I just don't know what's coming at me next. But, without wanting to seem overly pessimistic, it's generally not good. Extended family useless to help. Am I eating this chocolate to boost my serotonin and why because I'm on a whopping big dose already (150)mg. daily. Also valium prn and there's a lot of prn around here. Any ideas.

Tyno, I'm on 100 amitriptyline and it has made a carb junky out of me. I've been on it for 10 or it may even be 11 years by now and I can hardly remember not craving carbs. I'm not much into chocolate anymore for some reason I kinda lost my taste for it. Chocolate is a comfort food that has whatever it is called in it to make us feel good, brain fog there on the word I want to say. smilewinkgrin

The stress isn't helping your diet. Some people eat when they are stressed and some people don't eat when they are stressed. Have you tried getting help with your dad through social services??? That's a lot for one person to handle without breaks from it. Life happens and it can be very stressful and if you feel helpless in the situation that is not going to help you mentally or physically. I'm trying to get a grasp on a situation myself, nothing as bad as yours, to keep the stress and anxiety down.

Maybe you can find something to do with your hands, some craft, to keep from eating.

luv and hugs

Anyone with experience with any other tricyclics that might not have the carb crasy cravings. My doctor would be agreeable if something else had the neurological pain anesthetic qualities of Amytriptilene, w/0 the cravings. He of course is concerned due to the hypertensive effects of being overweight as well as the strain on my joints. Marlee, by the way, what did you find to crave beside chocolate? I can't even imagin a day w/o it.

Me too!  I can't control the carb cravings...the chocolate-thing is unreal.  I made the hubby go out in a blizzard last night and buy chocolate...he came home with three bags of dark chocolate chocolate chips and said "I hope this holds you over for a few days."  I have even gotten up in the middle of the night craving something sweet.  I have always been a carb addict, but it has gotten worse since on Lexapro.  I blame it on that.  I also eat raisin bread...I crave it.

I want to think it's the meds...

I crave chocolate and potatoes.  It's a problem since I'm diabetic!  Yikes!

Sherrine...I crave potatoes too.  Sometimes I fry them with onions and peppers for lunch, then eat a baked potato for dinner.  If I'm too lazy to peel them, I'll make a huge pile of instant potatoes for a snack.  This is bad for the hubby because he has trouble with his sugar too, likes potatoes and watching me chow them down tortures him!

For a while I kept apples oranges, cherries, strawberries, fresh fruit and cheese in house and made a deal with myself. I'll eat the healthy food first, then if I still have to have the sweets, I'll have a little. Well neext morning there was mago peelings, an empty bag of kettle cooked chips and at least half of a 1 KG. President's choice chocolate bar, littering my floor. So, at least I ate one healthy snack.

For the longest time I was craving fried chicken. Don't know why. But it kept sounding soooo gooood.

I get a lot of chocolate cravings too.

I'm not on any meds that should cause cravings, but I crave carbs like a drug addict. Chocolate is my number one culprit too.

I'm not sure if I can attribute it to the fibro or if I just self medicate with food.  I know that dark chocolate and other carbs can give you a serotonin boost, so maybe that is what my body is looking for.

I keep lots of healthy stuff around too, but I can't seem to function without the chocolate.  *sigh*

I'm going to make an effort to curb my cravings. I will stop buying those hugh delicious Belgian chocolate bars. There are these little Ghiradelli (sp?) bars, mint inside, with just four squares. I have to check to make sure they're not higher calorie than the Belgian chocolate, but if they're not, that's all I'll keep in the house.an't understand if it's a serotonin thing cause I Four or less of those will curb the craving and I won't pig out like I do with the rich milk chocolate. Wish me luck. I can't understand it being the serotonin that propels the cravings because I'm taking this whopping big dose (150mgs.) daily for depression. maybe it's not working. I'm not depressed much, anymore, so I can't figure it out. It has to be the amyltriptiline because I went off of that for a two year period a couple years back and I didn't have those cravings at all. In fact, I dropped quite a few pounds (like 30). Only problem was, I had to take strong pain meds to offset the Fibro pain. Here in Canada they don't recognize Fibromyalgia, so they don't offer much for the pain. I can get by with the mild pain relievers they give me (not for the Fibro but for the Facet Joint problem) along with the amyltriptilene. I can't even really talk honestly and openly about my meds with my two docs because their eyes glaze over when I say I have Fibromyalgia. Kind of stuck here eh? Also, w/o the  amyltriptilene I don't know if I will be able to sleep. So I have to figure out a healthy way to avoid the sugar and chocolate cravings. The other issue is, I only get the cravings at night. I climb in my bed around 7PM or 8PM(some life eh?), taking a cup of hot cocoa, and drop in a chunk of that belgian chocolate, sometime a handful of tiny marshmallows, and voila, nirvana. Only problem is, I then get up and go looking for more. Yikes. Maybe I could chain my ankle to the bedrail or something, keep me out of the cookie jar. Thanks to all.

I love Payday candy bars Tyno, the salt and sweet together. I also love any kind of gooey pastries.

I tried cutting back on the amitriptyline in the spring cause I figured as long as I have been on it, it probably wasn't doing anything for me. I found out after a few weeks when I went into a flare from hades for two weeks how much it was doing for me.

I guess after the holidays I will give cymbalta a good try and if it works maybe I can get off or at least cut down on the amitriptyline. I don't think cymbalta makes you crave carbs. I hope not or I will be a blimp. I hate taking these meds but with my brain chemicals I will be on them for life.

My cravings are in the evenings too. I think when my body gets tired it craves something for energy, doesn't work.

Can you imagine if we all had a potluck the foods that would be there, potatoes and sweets. tongue

I just wanted to say, for the sake of folks who may come here for information but not post...that while I TOTALLY get it that either fibromyalgia or the medication seems to cause cravings and/or weight gain in many people...I personally haven't experienced either. I still weigh 130 lbs (I'm 5'5") and I have for several years.

I just didn't want anyone to think that they shouldn't get medication if they're afraid of this.

Cheers!
I have Fibromyalgia, but nothing else!

I take Lyrica 150mg b.i.d.
Tramacet 75 mg for breakthrough pain

Tried amitryptelene 2.5 mg but it made me a zombie!

A potluck. What a great idea: potato salad, jellied fruit mold made with whipped cream, whoopie pies, hope you never encounter these, they'll send you into the closet. no, it is true we fibromites sometimes crave sweets, but we don't have to go that way. I've had times it wasn't so. But right now, it;s really a problem.

Pancakes smothered in syrup, yum.  I crave carbs something terrible; I take nortriptyline.  I used to be in tip top shape then I started on the nortriptyline and the craving started something fierce and I have put on about 25lbs.  How depressing!  I am determined to take it back off though and I'm confident that I will.  I could not do without the meds, as a matter of fact just today I started getting an old familiar pain that I had before I started with the nortriptyline.  I think by the new year I will need to increase the medicine.  The remember the immediate relief that I felt when I started the medicine and with each increase things got better.  I cannot live without the medicine!!

If anyone finds a cure for these cravings, please let me know.  Until then, bring on the dark chocolate turn .

Meggie
